LaFollette Council discusses library and potential sports complex ...

A crowded city council chamber greeted members Monday night before their scheduled workshop session. Coaches, parents and players from local Little League teams were present to show support for a proposed redesign of the old East LaFollette softball field into a new complex that would allow baseball, softaball, football and soccer to be played there.

Football coach Steven Phillips spoke to council members and said they are the only team in the league without a home field. They currently rotate and use fields at CCHS, Caryville, LaFollette, etc. He said the proposed renovation of the athletic field and area facilities would greatly benefit the league and bring more visitors to games.

Brian Miracle, with the local baseball program, is proposing a county-wide Dixie Youth baseball program and said there have already been over 200 sign-ups. He did say, however, that Jellico will not participate since they are opting to remain with a Little League team which is separate from Dixie Youth leagues. He too stressed the benefits of a new and improved converted athletic complex for area kids to play.

Recreation head Johnny Byrge spoke of how they plan to overlap two fields to allow conversion from one sport to another so that baseball/softball, football and soccer can all be played there. He said some more porperty may be needed. There are plans to add on to the concession building, add seating, add new steps and update restrooms as well as the press box. Byrge said some aluminum bleachers from the old school can be used but new seats will also be needed, probably at a cost of about $12,000. All told, the cost of the project is estimated to be around $64,000. The money is not in the recreation budget but Hansford Hatmaker suggested that if the city put the money up, it could be eventually returned over time through admission fees, etc. Other possibilities suggested included asking for help from the county with Joe Bollinger saying ?this should be a joint venture?. Mayor Mike Stanfield said the money could come from the community fund. There may be grants availbale as well.

CCHS football coach Justin Price addressed council and spoke of the benefits to the high school football program this new complex would bring.

Overall, it appeard council was on board with the project and it has been placed on the agenda for next week?s regular council meeting.

The next item on the agenda concerned the new library. City Administrator Cade Sexton showed a floor plan of the new facility with its spacious areas that?ll hold a computer lab and a special children?s section among other amenities. Librarian Nancy Green confirmed there will be fourteen computers for public use in the new library?nine are brand new and five are older PCs from the current library.

Sexton said the roof of the new library is almost finished. The cost of the roof, however, has gone from the approved $17,000 to about $78,000. Hansford Hatmaker wanted to know why there has been an overrun. City Finance Director Terry Sweat said he hasn?t received the purchase orders from Dixie Roofing so he couldn?t say. Council agreed the extra money needs to be approved.

A part-time librarian position will need to be filled as well.

Cade Sexton also offered suggestions for a main sign in front of the new library. Should it be on the ground or up on the building? Council decided to allow the architect to come up with what?s best.

Another agenda item included additions to the city splash park. A bid of $21,860 has been received to make those additions. It was added to next week?s agenda for approval.

The city?s police department is looking to purchase an all-terrain vehicle to patrol along the new walking trails downtown. Chief Jimmy Jeffries presented feasible options on several models of various sizes, capabilities and costs. Discussion on this will continue next week at the next regularly scheduled council meeting on Wednesday, March 4th at 6:00pm. The meeting was moved up a day to accomodate some members who will be out of town on Tuesday the 3rd.

Back in December, Florence and the Machine stripped down for a taping of MTV's venerable "Unplugged" series. And not surprisingly, this presented a rather-unique set of difficulties for the usually voluminous band — though not the kind you'd expect.

"It's such a huge thing, and it was so intimate, and I really enjoy doing things stripped back and having the strings and the choir, it was really wonderful," Florence Welch told MTV News. "But, what to say in between? I got so bashful. I was so grateful to be there, and I was trying to express that, and it just went into this weird, stilted speech. ... It ended up with me trying to talk but not saying any words. ... Singing is fine; talking, not so much."

Then again, we suspect Welch is just being modest, because April 9, Florence and the Machine will release MTV Unplugged — A Live Album, which captures every intimate moment of their performance ("I genuinely hope they don't include my talking," Welch admitted, laughing), including stirring takes on their hits "Dog Days Are Over," "Shake It Out" and "Cosmic Love," plus a pair of covers: "Try a Little Tenderness" and "Jackson" (with guest vocals by Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme).

Judging from the list of songs, you'd think the "Unplugged" taping was well-rehearsed. But as Welch explained, nothing could be further from the truth.

"We kind of winged it. I felt really comfortable: I'm kind of in my element in that environment, when you're able to really play," she said. "The thing I don't enjoy about TV performances is that I have to sing live to a backing track, because most times they can't afford to mic up the whole band, so you have to sing to something that's just going to keep going, with or without you. And performing in a stripped-back sense, with a band that's playing around you? It's so organic, and there's so much freedom to it."

Of course, her "Unplugged" performance also earned rave reviews from one very-prominent guest: Kanye West, who was front and center for the taping, and made his approval known from the very get-go.

"He was dancing and really going for it in the front row; it was amazing," Welch said. "At award shows, you can't really see anyone, because there's lights, and they're kind of far away, but for this, it was just like Kanye was just there. And I covered 'Try a Little Tenderness,' and he'd just sampled that for the Watch the Throne album, so I was like, 'Um, Hi ... you kind of got there before me, but I'm going to do this now, and it's kind of for you ...' He was smiling the whole way through, and I think he's a total genius, so to have him there was really incredible."

Meteor witnessed across Britain

Sightings of the meteor have been reported in Scotland and as far south as Devon

Police forces say they have received a number of calls reporting what is believed to have been a meteor.

A "huge fireball" was reported travelling from northern Scotland to southern England at about 21:40 GMT, amid fears a plane had crashed.

Police received reports of a "bright light" and "orange glow", but aircraft-related incidents were ruled out.

The Met Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite."

Meteors are particles from space that burn up as they plummet through Earth's atmosphere, sometimes emitting light, creating a "fireball" effect.

Meteorites are larger, more durable objects that survive heating in the atmosphere and land on Earth. It is not known if that happened on Saturday.

'Is life ending?'

Hundreds of people tweeted about what they had seen and the Kielder Observatory, in Northumberland, described it as a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over the county.

Strathclyde Police said it had been "inundated" with calls, while Lothian and Borders Police also reported taking "quite a lot" of calls.

Durham Police said air traffic control had confirmed there had not been any incidents of aircraft in difficulties.

A force spokeswoman said: "The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only."

Laura Yusuf, of Mitcham, in Surrey, said she saw the meteor while travelling on the M6.

"It was an amazing sight. Bright orange flames trailing behind it as it slowly burnt itself out," she told the BBC.

Another witness, who called BBC Radio 5 Live's Stephen Nolan programme, said: "I looked up and saw these two huge tails of light coming off it and I thought it was a plane on fire going down into Edinburgh.

"It was massive, there was the red at the back of it, then these two huge white tails and then these blue bits at the very end."

I?m pretty certain that my internal sigh was matched by a slight droop of my shoulders. This has been a common complaint from my girlfriend about beers I?ve made and have been trying to correct for a couple years now. It?s not always there and she seems to detect it more often than I do but I have gotten this flavor off and on. My belief was that the sanitizer I was using, iodophor, was causing this after taste; the flavor was uncommonly similar to the smell of iodine. I checked the amount I was using and according to the directions, I was using the right amount, which is good but this slightly metallic note has continued to occasionally appear, to my dismay.

I just kept forgetting to ask people about it. Thankfully, the OBC has a forum section now and I could just ask the question and come back to reference it later! I got some really good advice, including a link to an article written by a San Francisco homebrewer, which has me tweaking how I use my sanitizer.

Plus, I had enough people saying I should use StarSan instead of Iodophor, so I probably will switch when I?ve used all this up?assuming I can get a handle on the problem. I certainly hope so, because I don?t want to get rid of $32 worth of sanitizer. My money > less of my money, you know?
