UN: Some 5,000 Syrians being killed every month

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? U.N. officials say approximately 5,000 people a month are being killed in Syria and the flight of refugees is the worst since the 1994 Rwanda genocide.

Human rights deputy chief Ivan Simonovic told the U.N. Security Council Tuesday that "the extremely high rate of killings ... demonstrates the drastic deterioration of this conflict."

U.N. refugee chief Antonio Guterres said two-thirds of the nearly 1.8 million Syrian refugees known to the agency have fled since the beginning of 2013, an average of over 6,000 daily.

"We have not seen a refugee outflow escalate at such a frightening rate since the Rwandan genocide almost 20 years ago," he said.

U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos accused the government and opposition of "systematically and in many cases deliberately" failing their obligation to protect civilians.

Ex-Daily Beast Writer: 70% Chance GOP Takes Control Of Everything By 2017

Former Daily Beast writer Megan McArdle has thrown some cold water on Democratic hopes for 2016 ? and given conservatives a possible boost in confidence. ?In fact, she says that there?s a 70% probability that by 2017 Republicans could control the House, Senate, and the White House. ?Yeah, it?s seems far-fetched. ?We haven?t even entered the trenches for 2014, and we?re talking about 2016. ?Nevertheless,?her blog entry on July 12 explained her reasoning.

Since World War II, only four presidents have been succeeded by a member of their party. ?As I mentioned above, two of them accomplished this by dying in office. ?One of them accomplished this by resigning in disgrace ahead of his own impeachment. ?Only one of them, Ronald Reagan, left office at the end of his appointed term and was succeeded by a duly elected member of his own party. ?Mostly, the White House flips back and forth like a metronome.

At the beginning of Obama?s term, people were talking about the kind of Democratic dominance that FDR enjoyed. ?Didn?t happen. ?Isn?t going to. ?So I think the GOP goes into the race with a big edge on the White House. ?Voters just get tired after eight years.

For example, when I pointed out how few presidents have been succeeded by members of their own party, you may have been tempted to argue that Al Gore ?really? won. ?I?m not going to have that argument right now, but even assuming you?re correct, what does that tell you? ?That after the greatest economic boom in decades, the Democratic vice president fought hard to a statistical tie with the Republican governor of Texas. ?Sure, he wasn?t the most charismatic candidate either, but neither was George Bush. ?Getting a third term in the White House just seems to be really difficult. ?And Barack Obama is not going to finish with a ground-shaking economic boom.

Add to that the Democratic bench. ?Hillary Clinton is a formidable politician, but she will be nearly 70 years old in 2016. ?No one else except Biden (who is older than she) has anything like the national name recognition that multiple people on the GOP bench enjoy. ?But if one or both of those two decide to run (and I think it?s nearly certain that they will), they?ll probably get the nomination just because they will suck all the oxygen away from the other candidates?both the money and the publicity will follow them. ?And though they?re both formidable challengers, I think their age is going to hurt them. ?I think it would have hurt Reagan if he?d been running against more formidable opponents, but Carter was badly damaged, and Walter Mondale was a nice man who made a very good Senate candidate in Minnesota.

Granted, she did say that her analysis is subject to change based on the prognostications of Nate Silver, who serves as the left?s favorite elections predictor. ?He wrote on July 15 that Republican chances for retaking the senate astronomically increase after next year?s elections, which was reiterated in McArdle?s post.

A race-by-race analysis of the Senate, in fact, suggests that Republicans might now be close to even-money to win control of the chamber after next year?s elections.?Our best guess, after assigning probabilities of the likelihood of a G.O.P. pickup in each state, is that Republicans will end up with somewhere between 50 and 51 Senate seats after 2014, putting them right on the threshold of a majority.

It seems that Silver and McArdle are on the same wave length, as they both predicted the 50-51 ?fragile? GOP majority by 2017. ?The thing to takeaway from this is that Harry Reid?s days could be numbered if we play this thing right.

Matt Vespa is a conservative blogger who contributes to NewsBusters, Conservative Daily News, RedState, Right Wing News, The Young Cons, and was formerly with Hot Air's Greenroom. Prior to blogging, he was the Executive Director for the Dauphin County Republican Committee in Harrisburg. He has interned with various political organizations, including The Office of the Governor of New Jersey in 2010, and the Pennsylvania Republican Party in the summer of 2011. There, he participated in a massive GOTV effort in the NY-9, which saw Republican Bob Turner win former congressman Anthony Weiner's seat in a special election.

ManzielAP

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel will be the most scrutinized college player in the 2013 football season. ?We know that because he already is.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN confirms a report that Manziel left the Manning Passing Academy a day early. ?However, Mort says camp officials were ?adamant? that Manziel was not sent home by Manning family patriarch Archie prematurely due to partying.

?Johnny Manziel did participate in some activities in the 2013 Manning Passing Academy as a college counselor/coach,? a camp spokesman told Mortensen, who is present at the event. ?After missing and being late for practice assignments, Johnny explained that he had been feeling ill. Consequently, we agreed that it was in everyone?s best interest for him to go home a day early.?

It sounds like a diplomatic way of tiptoeing around a situation that could embarrass the Mannings almost as much as it would embarrass Manziel. After all, the Mannings want high-profile quarterbacks to choose to participate in the camp; if the Mannings start calling out guys who are essentially acting their age, the harder it could be to get them to choose to attend in the future. ?Likewise, the Mannings don?t want to create the impression that their camp is being run by actual or alleged booze hounds.

?I enjoyed meeting Johnny,? Peyton Manning told Mortensen. ?I can remember a 20-year-old Eli [Manning] missing a meeting and catching some flak. ?We always have counselors who leave early. ?Johnny was great with the campers for the time he was here. ?He had to leave early. ?I wish him the best and I want him to come back as a counselor next year.?

It?s possibly Peyton was being diplomatic, too; however, he hasn?t pulled punches in the past when necessary to call out folks who have been ?liquored up.?

Regardless, it?s another reason for scouts and the media to keep an eye on Manziel as he faces the challenge, whether he likes it or not, of maturing in to the kind of quarterback who won?t have non-football concerns prompt his draft stock to dip. ?And if there?s any behind-the-scenes truth to the reported rumors of partying, the private dressing down he undoubtedly received from Peyton was likely punishment enough.

9 suspected militants killed in drone strike, Pakistani military operation

Nine insurgents were killed in Pakistan this weekend, in two separate military operations. A US drone strike and an operation by the Pakistan Air Force targeted the mountainous tribal region which borders Afghanistan.?

At least nine suspected militants, including two foreigners, were killed in?Pakistan's lawless tribal region in a US drone strike and a separate?Pakistan?military operation, security officials said on Sunday.

Pakistan?has seen a spate of militant attacks since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took office last month, putting pressure on his team to act more aggressively to curb the insurgency.

Missile strikes by unmanned US aircraft have inflicted the most damage against Taliban fighters in the mountainous areas straddling the Afghan border in past years, sometimes with heavy civilian casualties.

In the third such attack since Sharif came to power, two suspected militants riding a motorcycle were struck by missiles in the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan on Saturday night, one official said.

"The two men, probably Arab nationals, were passing through Mosaki village when the drone fired two missiles and hit them," said the official.

Their identities were not clear. Another security source said they were foreign militants of Turkmen origin.

It is difficult to check the impact of drone attacks on both militants and civilians because independent observers and journalists have almost no access to the areas where most of the strikes occur.

The government, while condemning drone attacks as a violation of its sovereignty, wants to appear decisive in its own efforts to combat militants on its soil and has vowed to map out a new security strategy to tackle the insurgency.

In a separate operation by the?Pakistan?Air Force, jets pounded several militant hideouts overnight, killing seven insurgents, senior security officials said.

"These areas are known as strongholds of the militants from where they stage deadly attacks in Kohat and Peshawar," one official in Kohat told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Pakistani military officials believe mountains linking the Orakzai, Khyber and Kurram tribal areas are one of the main strongholds for the Taliban-linked militants in?Pakistan.

Another senior military official in the northwestern frontier city of Peshawar confirmed that air strikes had taken place "somewhere between Orakzai and Khyber".

"We could hear the sounds of fighter jets and see flames when bombs were dropped in the mountains," Shafqat Hussain, a local resident in Kohat, said of the overnight operation.

Many Taliban and their al Qaeda allies fled Afghanistan to?Pakistan's tribal areas after the US invasion in 2001. They retreated even deeper into the mountains following a?Pakistan?army offensive in 2009, launching attacks from places where ground forces cannot reach them.

RealClearMarkets - Is Technology A Barrier to Job Creation?

Here's a somber thought: We may never - or at least not anytime soon - regain "full employment," meaning an unemployment rate between, say, 4 percent and 5.5 percent. It is now four years from the recovery's start, and the number of jobs is still 2.2 million below the pre-recession peak. Since World War II, this has never happened. After the harsh 1981-82 recession, employment recouped lost ground in 12 months. Economists are searching for an explanation, and one recent candidate seems surprising: high tech.

It's usually seen as an engine of growth, but the spread of automated processes and robots has actually acted as a drag on job creation and has kept the unemployment rate high (7.6 percent in June), argue Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Digital technologies, they contend, have enabled companies to cut costs, increase productivity (i.e., efficiency), improve profits and slash payrolls. They expect more of the same.

"The MIT academics foresee dismal prospects for many types of jobs as these powerful new technologies are increasingly adopted not only in manufacturing, clerical and retail work but in professions such as law, financial services, education and medicine," wrote David Rotman in an informative story in the MIT Technology Review. A gap has opened between productivity increases and employment growth, goes the theory. If it persists, it would confound economic history.

Technological upheavals routinely disrupt. Airlines and interstate highways decimated railroad passenger service. Between 1945 and 1970, intercity rail travel dropped nearly 90 percent. Air conditioning drew people and plants from the Northeast and Midwest to the South. Early in the 20th century, supermarkets - a more efficient form of organizational technology - displaced small grocers. "While selling food cheaply was good for consumers, it was bad for the hundreds of thousands of retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers who needed high food prices in order to make a living," wrote Marc Levinson in his book "The Great A&P and the Struggle for Small Business in America."

But these and other large technological shifts - from steam power to electrification - typically haven't spawned the permanent rise in unemployment feared by Brynjolfsson and McAfee, says Harvard economist Lawrence Katz. Some existing workers lost their jobs; it was hard on them. Yet there were always "new sources of labor demand" that prevented a steep rise in unemployment.

This is the crux of the matter. Productivity-enhancing technologies usually create more demand than they destroy, through two channels. First, lower prices enable consumers to buy more. If grocery costs fall, shoppers can purchase more food - or something else entirely. Lower computer chip prices have spawned mass markets for personal computers, cellphones and tablets.

The second channel is higher wages and profits. Some efficiency gains go to workers, managers and investors. Their greater purchasing power then raises total demand and living standards. Over the past half-century, higher productivity in manufacturing and agriculture has enabled Americans to spend more on health care and education. If history repeats itself, fears about the digital revolution (like earlier fears of other technologies) will fade.

There's the rub: Will history repeat itself?

It's a stretch to see digital technologies as a major source of today's unemployment. In the recession, the economy lost 8.7 million jobs. Most were non-digital, concentrated in construction, finance, retailing and manufacturing. What seems less dubious is that, in a permanently sluggish economy, firms might favor digital investments that shave costs and sustain profits. McAfee envisions warehouses maintained by robots, trucks driven by computers and automated language translations. The digital revolution could stymie job growth.

Unfortunately, the Great Recession abetted this protective psychology. This keeps unemployment up. Companies didn't just fire workers; they also went on a hiring strike. "In the Great Recession, [hiring] took a bigger hit than in any previous recession - and has not recovered," economist John Haltiwanger of the University of Maryland recently told a conference of the National Bureau of Economic Research. In other post-1980 recessions, he said, less hiring accounted for about 20 percent of the job loss; in the Great Recession, the share was roughly 60 percent.

Haltiwanger sees the economy becoming less dynamic. Young firms less than five years old create a huge number of new jobs, but the rate of business start-ups has declined - and with it, new jobs. In the late 1980s, start-ups' share of net job creation was nearly half; now, it's just below 40 percent. The causes of the slump in start-up firms are unclear. Some candidates: an aging society, government regulations, more risk-aversion.

The recent pickup in hiring to 200,000 a month, about 10 percent higher than 2012's rate, is encouraging. But it's still a long way to "full employment." Projections have us getting there in 2017 or 2018, assuming faster economic growth and no recession. Let's hope that's not wishful thinking.

Britain's gone crazy ? royal baby crazy

As Kate and William await their big day, royal baby eccentricities abound.

Jewel-encrusted baby gifts, betting on names, royal baby-themed crackers ? these are just a few of the various eccentricities that have abounded in recent weeks as the world watches with bated breath for Britain?s future monarch.

Bets have been running for weeks now on all things related to the upcoming birth, from the sex and name of the baby to even the day it will happen. According to The Week, bookmakers are currently saying tomorrow, Thursday July 11, is most likely to be the big day.

And though the sex of the baby is still unknown ? the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge?prefer to be surprised ? a surge of interest has pushed Alexandra to the fore. Other girls' names in the running include Victoria and Diana, reports the Telegraph. The most widely speculated boy's name is that of Kate?s younger brother, James.

The child will be given the title Prince or Princess of Cambridge. But regardless of gender, he or she will be third in line for the throne, since Parliament passed a law mandating that a female heir cannot be overtaken by a younger male relative.

Gamblers aren?t the only ones spending money on the royal baby. Sudocrem, which makes skin care creams,?has commissioned British jewelry designer Theo Fennell to design a jewel-studded charm bracelet that also serves as a diaper-rash-cream holder for Kate, reports Headlines and Global News. The bracelet costs a reported $15,000.

And that's just one of the gifts the royal couple has received. As HNGN continues:

So far, Kate Middleton and Prince William have received everything from a cardboard box from the Finnish government to a knitted kangaroo from Australia's [former] Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and a crate of organic baby food. PETA gifted the Duke and Duchess a faux-sheepskin baby blanket complete with a little stuffed animal giraffe, and Finnish social security service, Kela, sent the new parents a "baby box" that contains rompers, leggings, a hooded bath towel, hairbrush, diaper rash cream, a picture book, a snowsuit, teething toy and ... condoms!

Other than gifts, Kate and William can expect a deluge of unsolicited advice from the public. According to the Telegraph, parenting website Mumsnet has asked its readers to tweet advice to the soon-to-be mother using the hashtag ?#tips4kate.? The best tweets will be compiled and published in a book that will be sent to the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge.

Some of the advice, however, has come from an unlikely source. Nicole ?Snooki? Polizzi, former star of reality TV show ?The Jersey Shore? and recent mother, has posted a public letter offering her advice to Kate, reports CBS. Here?s what she had to say:

"In the beginning, right when you take your royal golden nugget home to the castle is the most exciting experience of your life. I couldn't wait to wake up in the middle of the night to take care of my little prince Lorenzo."

"But that lasts for about a few days. Then it's like, 'I love you but OMG stop crying! I'm exhausted.' The lack of sleep you will get used to -- just do your makeup, put a tiara on, and you'll look beautiful as usual," she added.

At least the royal couple will not be the only recipients of baby-related goods. According to the Huffington Post, the Royal Mint will be distributing silver coins to all children born on the same day as the royal baby. Only a limited amount?? 2,013 coins?? will be minted though, so new parents will have to act fast in order to get one.?

The baby will be born at St. Mary's Hospital in London, where both William and his brother Prince Harry were born.

Obamas to return to Martha's Vineyard this summer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's back to the beach for President Barack Obama this summer.

The White House says the president and the first lady will return to Martha's Vineyard next month for a nine-day stay.

In keeping with White House policy, the vacation plans of their daughters were not disclosed Friday. In the past, daughters Sasha and Malia have joined their parents for trips to the Massachusetts island.

Officials say that the Obamas expect to arrive on Martha's Vineyard on Aug. 10 and leave on Aug. 18.

It will be Obamas' fourth summer vacation on Martha's Vineyard since he became president in 2009, though he has been visiting the area since the 1990s. Obama skipped a trip last year during his re-election campaign.

The Boston Globe first reported the Obamas' vacation plans.

Dad: Slain Calif. boy wanted to live with him

MENIFEE, Calif. (AP) ? Terry Dewayne Smith Sr. had been expecting his 11-year-old son to fly home this summer to live with him in West Virginia after two years with his mom in Southern California.

On Thursday, the bereaved father talked about flying Terry Dewayne Smith Jr.'s ashes back to West Virginia instead.

The boy was reported missing Sunday, prompting a massive search. On Wednesday, authorities announced they had found a body matching Terry Jr.'s description in a shallow grave under a tree behind his mother's house.

The boy's 16-year-old half brother was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder and could be charged as early as Friday, a person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press. The person requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

The suspect's name has not been released. He has the same mother as the victim, but a different father.

"All I want to do is get Terry Jr. back here because that was the last thing he told me on the phone," said Smith Sr., a 62-year-old retired truck driver. "He wanted to come home."

Initial reports from the mother, relayed by law enforcement, described Terry Jr. as an autistic boy who took special medication and answered only to his nickname, "JuJu." His father, however, insisted that his son was not autistic.

The boy lived with him until 2011, when he went to live with his mother, and was a normal kid who loved video games and baseball, he said.

"He was a very bright, well-adjusted child, at least he was when he left here," said Smith Sr. "He pushed buttons and would aggravate you. But, other than that, it was just the typical way ... of a typical boy trying to get his way."

Smith Sr. also helped raise the half brother accused in the case, he said. The teen moved from West Virginia to California after his mother abruptly pulled him out of school, he said.

"I taught him how to walk. I helped him when he was on the baseball team here," he said, recalling that he called the half brother "little Spider-Man."

A phone listing for the boy's mother, Shawna Smith, was disconnected. Messages left at a second number associated with her address were not returned.

Investigators told Smith Sr. that Terry Jr. died after a hit to the head but declined to say more, citing a request from police who are still working the case.

Hundreds of volunteers searched for Terry Jr. for more than three days in abandoned trailers and campsites tucked into the scrubby hillsides of rural Riverside County, where horse ranches dot the landscape and large stretches of land remain undeveloped. Sheriff's deputies fanned out on horseback and with bloodhounds in the triple-digit heat and helicopters buzzed overhead, searching for clues.

A detective involved in the search gave credit for the discovery of the body to a volunteer woman who said she had a vision of where to find Terry.

Detective John Powers told KFI-AM radio on Thursday that Pam Ragland and her children came to the property where investigators, including him, had searched thoroughly already and found the body immediately.

"She actually went right up the driveway of the house, on to the property, and right up to the body of this boy," Powers said. "Not in 23 years have I ever seen anything like this."

Taiwanese Paper is the Latest to Claim that the iPad Mini Won?t See Retina Until 2014

iPad-Mini-Front1

The?Economic Daily News, a Taiwanese newspaper with connections to the supply chain of most technology companies, is today claiming that a shortage of appropriately sized retina displays will mean that the iPad mini will retain its current display resolution of 1024-by-768 throughout 2013.

Considering that the only real downside of the iPad mini for most is the relatively low resolution, it certainly is a disappointment. Previous reports have given similar data, usually citing the same reasons as well. It?s impossible to say exactly what Apple will do until the product itself is released, but it does seem likely at this point that the iPad mini will not go retina this year.

If the iPad mini does not go retina, it seems likely that Apple will instead focus on other aspects of the device. Notably, the processor, graphics, and RAM will likely be updated to be more powerful, and the battery life will also likely see a boost. There?s also the possibility that a non-retina iPad mini could be sold for less, making the device more competitive with other small tablets on the market.

International students take their university experience home

12 July 2013

The University of Sydney and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) today congratulated 39 students from 13 countries including Indonesia, Vietnam, Mongolia, Rwanda and Sierra Leone on completing their Australia Awards Scholarships and associated studies at the University.

The students studied areas such as public health, law, public administration, veterinary science, economics and nursing.

"Australia Awards recipients bring diversity to the international student cohort, enriching the experience of all students at the University of Sydney. They also serve as cultural and diplomatic ambassadors of the University upon their return home," Jay Jayatilaka, Acting Director of the International Office, said. Australia Awards scholars are high academic achievers in their home countries and future leaders in the development of their regions.

Their scholarships allow for coursework or research study in line with the priorities of each country, and the students receive support for living expenses, fieldwork, and attending conferences.

The completing students spoke warmly of the tireless work done by the supportive staff of the University and their experiences of studying.

"My experience at the University and Sydney Law School has been truly thrilling," said Frank Kigenza (Master of Health Law), a lawyer from Kigali, Rwanda, who was selected for the prestigious Australia Awards Leadership Program.

Kigenza plans to focus on research and advocacy in public health law and policy in Rwanda and in the region. He teaches law at the National University of Rwanda and hopes to shortly take a position on the National Health Ethics Committee of Rwanda.

Ana Mustiana (Master of Veterinary Science) is a veterinarian from Indonesia and a recipient of a fellowship from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).

Mustiana looks forward to maintaining relationships and networks with friends and colleagues from the University and being involved in upcoming ACIAR projects in eastern Indonesia as the district veterinarian for Mataram City, Lombok. Her thesis findings on rabies infections in Lombok will be invaluable, as the spread of rabies is currently a significant issue for the Indonesian government and may impact Australia in the near future.

There are currently 238 Australia Awards Scholars at the University of Sydney, of which 75 students are Higher Degree by Research (HDR), 142 are Master's by coursework students and 21 are undertaking their very first tertiary education degree in bachelor level programs.

Mark Snowden, from the Australian Awards Office congratulated the scholars for their achievement:

"Not only does your Australia Award provide you with a world-class education, but while in Australia you have had the opportunity to build people-to-people links that will continue to provide benefits well in to the future."

BLU Dash 45 offers quadcore Android 42 action and a 5MP camera for $139

Cheap smartphones are getting more common, but the BLU Dash 4.5 is redefining the term budget. Senators try again to lower student loan rates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators are back to the starting line in their search for a compromise that would reduce interest rates on student loans after being spooked by the $22 billion price tag that accompanied a potential deal.

Lawmakers from both parties had agreed on a tentative proposal that offered Democrats the promise that interest rates would not reach 10 percent and gave Republicans a link between borrowing terms and the financial markets that they sought. But that deal's red ink proved disqualifying and sent them back to square one.

Senators and their top aides, along with White House and Education Department officials, were going to return to negotiations for a deal that would undo the rate increase on subsidized Stafford loans, which doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent on July 1.

Without congressional action before students return to campus, the increase could mean an extra $2,600 for an average student, according to Congress' Joint Economic Committee.

"We have been working with lawmakers to make that compromise happen. We need to make sure that students don't see their rates double," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Thursday.

The $22 billion cost for the 10-year rate compromise, however, stopped progress in its tracks and sent lawmakers back to the drawing board. The unexpected cost estimate was unlikely to end talks among lawmakers about how they might reduce rates on subsidized Stafford loans but added difficulty to an already tricky timeline.

The cost estimate was described by a congressional aide involved in the negotiations. The aide was not authorized to discuss the proposal by name and insisted on anonymity because the Congressional Budget Office report had not yet been widely released.

Under the plan lawmakers were considering, interest rates on new loans would be based on the 10-year Treasury note, plus an additional percentage to pay for administrative costs. The proposal includes a limit on how high rates could climb, a provision that Democrats insisted be included in any legislation.

That proved unexpectedly costly and, for the moment, proved problematic for negotiators.

Serious work on a compromise came just hours after Democratic-led efforts to restore the 3.4 percent interest rates failed once more to overcome a procedural hurdle in the Senate. After several failures to find a stopgap measure, Democrats abandoned that tactic and instead looked for a way to lower rates for students before their return to campus this fall.

President Barack Obama's chief of staff, Denis McDonough, and Education Secretary Arne Duncan met with lawmakers Tuesday night to discuss possible options, including the market-based approach Obama included in his budget outline. Democrats insisted they try one last time to restore the 3.4 percent rate.

After that failed, lawmakers turned to a compromise approach and met Wednesday in the office of Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., to discuss the next steps. White House education and budget advisers joined those conversations and helped guide lawmakers to the proposal under consideration.

Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, joined negotiations on a potential deal he previously called unacceptable. He secured concessions on rate caps from the main authors of an earlier potential compromise, Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Angus King, I-Maine.

All said they were willing to tinker with some of the details to make it more acceptable to Harkin and his Democratic allies.

But the tinkering ? particularly the cap on rates while students are in college ? proved costlier than anticipated. Lawmakers from both parties agreed that any compromise could not be laden with red ink.

Tumblr on iOS expands search, Android version gets new animations

Tumblr on iOS expands search, Android version gets new animations

Tumblr's iOS and Android apps were both updated today, with the former getting a "new discovery experience" and the latter getting a variety of updates (most notably a UI redesign). The iOS app's update adds the ability to "search tags and blogs" directly through Tumblr iOS' "discovery" section (previously you could only search by tag), making it all the easier to find that entry on Public Shaming you wanted to show mom.

The Android app, meanwhile has "fancy new post animations," and apparently it makes "images pop!" There are also a couple of bug fixes and some functionality updates -- full notes for both versions are just below, and you can snag Tumblr for iOS and Android at the links in the source. Now if you'll excuse us, we've gotta get back to reading Dear Trolls.

Beating Blood Cancers One Mile at a Time with the Leukemia and ...

This is a sponsored post written on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Cancer. ?It?s something that happens to someone else. ?You never imagine that it could touch your life, your family, your home. ?Until it does. ?And blood cancers are a disease that are effecting lives everywhere. ?Even mine.

You see, my grandmother died from Lymphoma when I was two years old. ?I?ve grown up with stories of how much she wanted a grand-daughter. ?How much she would have loved me. ?How I look exactly like her. ?But here?s the thing ? I grew up without her. ?I never had her braid my hair. ? We never sat down for tea parties with my dolls. ?In fact, I don?t even remember her. ?Yes, I?ve seen her picture and heard stories but I don?t have one single memory of my own of her. ?Lymphoma robbed me of that.

Nan3

When you personally know what you?ve lost to a blood cancer like Lymphoma, it makes the fight personal. ?It makes you want to fight back somehow ? to take out this disease that robbed you of so much more than memories. ?It makes you want to prevent someone else from having to wonder ?What if I?d known her??

And this desire to find a world without blood cancers led me to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. ?They are the world?s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancers with a?mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin?s disease and myeloma, and improve the?quality of life of patients and their families. ?They fund lifesaving research and have invested nearly 1 billion dollars since 1954 to help find a world without blood cancers.

LLS

But this brought me to the question of how can I get involved? ?What can I do to make a difference. ?And those of you who know much about me know that I?m all about getting out and going instead of waiting for a cure to be found. ?And one way I can do this is through exercise! ?Not only does it help me keep myself strong but it helps me to give back as well. ?Because, you see, Team in Training, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s flagship fundraising campaign also just happens to be the world?s largest and most successful sports endurance training program!

Founded by Bruce Cleveland, Team in Training was started as a way to help him get past the feelings of helplessness and fear he felt after his daughter?s diagnosis with blood cancer. ?Now, 25 years later?TNT has trained more than 570,000 people and?helped LLS invest more than $875 million in research to discover and deliver breakthrough?cancer treatments that are saving lives today.

teamintraining1

But Team in Training is not just made of people who have lost loved ones. ?It?s formed from family members of those who are fighting and even survivors of blood cancer. ?It consists of a group of people coming together and training to beat a disease and remember those who have not. ?And Team in Training participants are all over the world! ?Because as part of the Team in Training program, participant have a choice of more than 200 accredited national and local events in the US and abroad that they can participate in. ?In exchange for raising funds in conjunction with Team in Training, they receive four to five months of personalized training by TNT-Certified Professional Coaches ? ensuring that they are ready to take on their event one mile at a time!

teamintraining2

Through this program, Team in Training uses the impact of physical activity to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s research and helps make a positive impact on both blood cancer patients and their families! ?After finding out about this program, I?m inspired to participate in my grandmother?s honor! ?And I?m inspired to help fight these diseases! ?To find your inspiration and get involved today, click here.

So, why should you get involved today? ?Why does it matter? ?Well, I?ll tell you! ?While research from organizations like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society have made great steps in the fight against blood cancers, these is still more to be done! ?Currently, about half of blood cancer patients do not survive, making research to fight these diseases essential. ?And while the most common form of childhood leukemia now has a 90% survival rate, there are still 10% of children who are losing this fight. ?For me that is heartbreaking.

So, for those children; for grown-ups too; join me in this fight. ?Don?t stand by and watch while another mother loses her child. ?Don?t do nothing while a little girl never gets to know her grandmother. ?Instead, join this battle today! ?There is so much YOU can do! ?And your involvement could be the one that makes the difference!

TeaminTraining3

Please help! ?Visit www.teamintraining.org TODAY and improve your life and the lives of others. ?And at the end of this race, there will be hundreds and even thousands of winners thanks to you!

To get you excited about Team in Training, we?re honored to be giving away a way to show your support! ?One lucky winner will receive a Team in Training Prize Pack that includes a shirt, pens, mug, sunscreen and other goodies to help you show your support for Team in Training!

Leeds teenager murdered in street for drug debt, jury told

A TEENAGER was killed after being chased through the streets and stabbed repeatedly in a daytime attack after a row over drugs, a jury heard.

A court heard Kieran Butterworth, 17, bled to death following the attack by Ghanu Stout on Bellbrooke Street, Harehills.

Stout, 27, formerly of Lupton Avenue, Harehills, is on trial at Leeds Crown Court where he denies murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter.

Simon Waley, prosecuting, told the court: ?At the time of the killing, Kieran owed some money to the defendant. The prosecution say that money was owed for drugs.

?It is the prosecution?s case that this defendant sought out Kieran that day, that he was angry in relation to that debt and before he went to find Kieran he armed himself with a knife.? Mr Waley described how Stout grabbed Kieran in a cafe on Bellbrooke Street as he was buying sandwiches with his friend, Tyrone Henry, around lunchtime on February 12 this year.

Kieran managed to break free and run away but Stout chased after him. One witness described how Stout?s shouting was ?like venom? as he gave chase. The prosecutor said Stout caught Kieran at a grass verge and climbed on top of him. He added: ?Mr Henry says that the defendant was punching in what he described as a ?hammering? actions.?

Mr Waley said Mr Henry then noticed Stout had what appeared to be a knife.

CCTV footage captured shortly after the alleged attack shows Kieran running across a road with his hand to his chest. He collapsed a short time later and was pronounced dead later that day in hospital.

Mr Waley said Stout handed himself in to police the next day but denied attacking Kieran. He told officers he had gone to meet Kieran at the cafe but had been threatened. Stout said he didn?t realise he had a knife in his pocket but pulled it out. He said Mr Henry then pushed him and he and Kieran ended up on the floor.

Stout said he then got up and left and didn?t even know Kieran was injured.
