Liz Kozak: Leave Our Princesses Alone

What if there were an evil queen who sat on high in her castle, blogging away about the bodies of our favorite princesses?

...That flabby-finned Ariel could stand to swim away from the all-you-can-eat seaweed buffet!

...Is it just me, or does it look like Cinderella's been making pies outta that pumpkin carriage?

...More like "Beauty and the BEEF," know what I'm saying???

Last week, People.com posted a blog written by Trainer-to-Some-of-the-Stars, Harley Pasternak. It was called "Harley Pasternak Blogs About the Fit (And Not So Fit) Former Disney Stars."

In this post, he goes down an all-star firing squad of former Disney stars and essentially rates their fitness levels and lifestyles based on his expert opinion. Ashley Tisdale tops his list for one solid reason: She only eats one solid meal a day. But Christina Aguilera? "While she's definitely not grossly overweight, she doesn't look comfortable in her own skin." Well, phew. I'm sure if this superstar working mother had time to read this, she's be relieved to find out she's "not grossly overweight." I bet it's her new Twitter bio.

Let's note four important things about his chosen grouping:

1. All of the celebrities he mentions are women. What about Kyle Massey? Ryan Gosling? Billy Ray Cyrus? Hey Harley, they're not gonna judge themselves, you know.
2. Not only are they all women, but several of them have birthed children and/or publicly battled various forms of mental illness and/or eating disorders.
3. He has not worked with 7 out of the 10 stars on the list, so basically, he knows as much about their diet and exercise routines as I do... which is what I read in People.
4. Not a single one of them is clinically obese, much less even conversationally chubby.

To his credit, Mr. Pasternak quickly sent out a ten-tweet apology later that day, saying, "In no way, shape or form do I think that a woman's value is determined by her weight. I was not commenting on these women's worth."

So what was he commenting on?

My daughter watches a healthy dose of the Disney Channel. In fact, she has her own scientific method for rating its stars. They each fall into one of two categories: Sofia the First or Not Sofia the First. I'm totally good with this ranking scale. I do not need her thinking about who looks best in a bikini or who may or may not be in Olympic athlete shape. I prefer she not concern herself with liquid diets or genetics vs. metabolism rates at this time, and instead focus on how one adjusts from being just a girl in the village doing alright to becoming a princess overnight. Now that's something to blog about.

Leave our princesses alone.

Recon teases new sports heads-up display for sunglasses, promises more info this summer

Image

Anyone who's ever had a nice brisk bike ride through a snowstorm is likely to cringe a bit at the above image. Though the gentlemen pictured is looking forward to the summer season for other reasons -- that's when the Recon heads-up display he's testing is set to get a bigger reveal. In the meantime, we're stuck staring at the above image of HUD-equipped sunglasses and wondering precisely what it all means -- aside, of course, for the company's move off the ski slopes.

NC schools, government offices to hold tornado drills Wednesday

Schools and government buildings in North Carolina are holding tornado drills as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week.

The drills are scheduled for Wednesday morning.

In 2012, the National Weather Service issued 60 tornado warnings for North Carolina and confirmed 21 tornadoes that injured 22 people. The tornadoes caused more than $19 million in damages.

The months of March, May and November are the deadliest months for tornadoes in the state.

A tornado watch means a tornado is possible, while a warning means a tornado has been spotted.

North Carolina Emergency Management recommends the following safety tips:

  • During severe weather, listen to local radio, television, a weather channel or a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration radio for information.
  • Know the terms. A tornado watch means a tornado is possible. A tornado warning means a tornado has been spotted and that shelter should be taken immediately.
  • At home, take shelter in a basement or the lowest floor of the house in an interior room, such as a hallway, pantry or closet. Stay away from windows.
  • In school, go to inner hallways, but stay out of rooms where there is a large roof span, such as gymnasiums, auditoriums or cafeterias.
  • In the office, take shelter under something sturdy, such as a desk or a table to protect from flying debris or a collapsed roof.
  • Mobile homes are especially vulnerable to high winds. Residents should go to a prearranged shelter when severe weather is predicted.
  • In the car, drivers who see a tornado forming or approaching should leave the car immediately and take shelter in a low-lying area. Tornadoes can easily blow vehicles off a road and many people have been killed while trying to outrun a tornado.
  • On foot or bicycle, go to a safe place immediately to avoid falling trees, downed power lines or lightning. Inside a sturdy building is best. Lying flat in a ditch or low area may also offer protection, but beware of possible flash flooding and flying debris.
  • Preparation for any type of severe weather also means having a family disaster plan and an emergency supply kit assembled and in a location that is easy to access during an emergency. More information is available at www.ReadyNC.org.
