Hill's clutch shot pushes Pacers past Lakers 79-77

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? George Hill's high-arching shot over Dwight Howard went in with 0.1 seconds left, and the Indiana Pacers withstood Kobe Bryant's 40-point performance and the Lakers' last-minute rally for a 79-77 victory over Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Hill scored 19 points and hit that enormous clutch shot for the Pacers, who won their third straight road game over the Lakers after losing 11 consecutive regular-season games since Staples Center opened in 1999.

The Pacers' sturdy defense stifled the Lakers' up-tempo offense for most of the night, turning the game into an ugly grind before the thrilling finish.

Bryant hit a tying 3-pointer with 24.5 seconds left and produced the 114th 40-point game of his career despite playing with an apparent case of the flu for the Lakers, who dropped to 2-3 under new coach Mike D'Antoni.

David West scored 16 points and Paul George had 12 in the opener of Indiana's four-game road trip.

The Lakers flirted with the lowest-scoring game and worst shooting percentage in franchise history before scoring eight straight points in the waning minutes, tying it at 74 on Howard's dunk with 1:56 to play. After West made one free throw, Howard and Metta World Peace combined to miss four straight free throws, dropping Los Angeles' performance at the line to 23 for 43.

After Hill made a running shot, Bryant hit a 3-pointer in front of the Lakers' bench to tie it.

The Pacers wound down the clock for Hill, who beat Pau Gasol off the dribble and arched his shot over the leaping Howard, who blocked four shots and scored 17 points despite 3-of-12 shooting at the free throw line.

Before outscoring the rest of his team combined, Bryant missed the Lakers' morning shootaround when he fell ill. He spent the day in bed, drinking fluids and listening to Bob Marley, before giving another high-scoring performance, albeit with 10 turnovers and 12-for-28 shooting.

The Lakers returned from a three-game trip for a three-game homestand, their final multigame stretch at home before Christmas. After playing six games in a nine-day stretch earlier this month, the Lakers are clearly running near empty ? and they had little to give in the first half against Indiana.

The Pacers jumped to an early lead and hung on to it despite falling into a 1-for-23 shooting slump in the first half, playing more than 12 minutes with just one field goal. The Lakers couldn't take advantage, missing 14 of their 18 shots in the second quarter and repeatedly failing to move the ball at D'Antoni's preferred pace.

Bryant made five of his first six shots, emulating his many strong performances with the flu, but fell into a 1-for-10 slump before getting rolling again late in the third quarter while Los Angeles made a 13-2 run. Bryant had nine turnovers in the first three quarters, but also had 29 points ? more than his teammates' combined 28.

NOTES: The Pacers stay in California to face Sacramento and Golden State before stopping in Chicago on the way home from their trip. ... The Lakers handed out bobblehead dolls in the likeness of the late Chick Hearn, their beloved broadcaster who would have turned 96 on Tuesday. ... Ashton Kutcher, David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Kaley Cuoco, Gene Simmons, Shannon Tweed and Tenacious D band members Jack Black and Kyle Gass watched from courtside.

Navy Drone Boards Aircraft Carrier for 1st Time

A robotic drone the size of a fighter jet has deployed aboard a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier for the first time in history.

The Navy's X-47B robot warplane is leading a revolution in robotic warfare that could replace many of the U.S. military's manned aircraft in coming decades. The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman took the drone aboard on Nov. 26 to prepare for its first flight tests at sea ? a crucial step toward ensuring that robotic aircraft can take off and land as part of normal carrier operations.

"We've been testing the aircraft for the last several years and to finally put it on a ship is so exciting," said Cmdr. Kevin Watkins, flight test director for the Navy Unmanned Combat Air System program. "If these tests are successful, they will prove that the future for unmanned aircraft is wide open."

X-47B has a stealthy "flying wing" shape resembling a flying saucer from the side and a wingspan of more than 62 feet (19 meters) ? wider than that of the F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets that commonly operate from U.S. Navy carriers.

The USS Harry S. Truman has the honor of becoming the first modern aircraft carrier to play home to testing for such an unmanned aircraft. Testing over a three-week period is scheduled to take place while the carrier is both sitting in port and under way at sea. [Could the Navy Ever Build a Flying Aircraft Carrier?]

"It means a lot to our crew to be part of naval history," said Lt. Cmdr. Larry Tarver, aircraft handling officer on the USS Harry S. Truman. "We have sailors who received additional training to safely move the X-47B and they are excited to play a part in its testing."

Past flight tests for the X-47B include taking off and landing from a Navy air base and testing the drone's software "brains" that would allow it to conduct midair refueling on its own. The drone is also expected to have the ability to take off and land from a carrier without direct human control.

Still, a human drone operator would still stand by even if he or she is not controlling the drone directly. The operator also has an arm-worn joystick controller that can guide the X-47B drone as it taxis on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

No weapon testing has taken place with the X-47B so far. But the Navy undoubtedly wants a fighter-size drone that could one day carry either guns or missiles with a license to kill.

Jeff Weiner Career Advice - Business Insider

AP

At Business Insider's Ignition 2012 conference today, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner spoke about how his father always told him that he could do anything he put his mind to. "I assumed every kid got told the same thing," Weiner told Business Insider's Henry Blodget. "It didn't occur to me until much later how much of an influence that had on me."?

According to Weiner, the big career mistake most people make is not having a real destination or goal in mind.

That feeds into the one question he asks the young graduates and professionals that come to him for advice. "It always starts with asking, 'In 30 years, what do you want to have accomplished?'" Weiner said. "It's OK not to have an answer, but you need to start thinking about it. Once you know that, things start to become clear. The people you meet, the opportunities and situations you find are often a function of that objective."

When people don't have that goal, they run into challenges. They pursue what they're skilled at or what they're passionate about exclusively, instead of applying both towards a real goal. That's when people get sidetracked. "They get attracted to the promotion, the raise, the hot company as opposed to what they want to do," Weiner said.

Weiner has lived his advice. A passion for leveling the playing field and democratizing access to information, and his skill and fascination with digital media eventually led to him being CEO of LinkedIn, which has increased access to economic opportunity and information.

Jeff Weiner never wanted to be a CEO. But he was driven by purpose and passion, and despite not caring about his position or title, he ended up on top. ?

It's a different path and a different perspecitve, but good advice. ?

Euro zone, IMF reach deal on long-term Greek debt | Firstpost

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund clinched agreement on a new debt target for Greece on Monday in a breakthrough towards releasing an urgently needed tranche of loans to the near-bankrupt economy, officials said.

After nearly 10 hours of talks at their third meeting on the issue in as many weeks, Greece?s international lenders agreed to reduce Greek debt by 40 billion euros, cutting it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, via a package of steps.

The deal should open the way for a major aid instalment needed to recapitalise Greece?s teetering banks and enable the government to pay wages, pensions and suppliers in December.

However, discussions were continuing on the methods to be used to lower Athens? debt burden, including a possible debt buyback and a lowering of interest rates on loans to Greece.

The euro strengthened against the dollar after news of a deal was reported by Reuters.

?It?s going very slow, but we have financing and a Debt Sustainability Analysis. We?ve filled the financing gap until the end of programme in 2014,? one official engaged with the talks said. A second official confirmed the figures.

Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras said earlier that Athens had fulfilled its part of the deal by enacting tough austerity measures and economic reforms, and it was now up to the lenders to do their part.

?I?m certain we will find a mutually beneficial solution today,? he said on arrival for the marathon talks.

Greece, where the euro zone?s debt crisis erupted in late 2009, is the currency area?s most heavily indebted country, despite a big ?haircut? this year on privately-held bonds. Its economy has shrunk by nearly 25 percent in five years.

Negotiations had been stalled over how Greece?s debt, forecast to peak at 190-200 percent of GDP in the coming two years, could be cut to a more sustainable 120 percent by 2020.

The agreed figure fell slightly short of that goal, and the IMF was still insisting that euro zone ministers should make a firm commitment to further steps to reduce the debt stock if Athens implements its adjustment programme faithfully.

The key question remained whether Greek debt can become sustainable without euro zone governments having to write off some of the loans they have made to Athens.

A source familiar with IMF thinking said the global lender was demanding immediate measures to cut Greece?s debt by 20 percentage points of GDP, with a commitment to do more to reduce the debt stock in a few years if Greece fulfills its programme.

To reduce the debt to 124 percent by 2020, the ministers were putting together a package of steps including a debt buyback funded by a euro zone rescue fund, reducing the interest rate on loans and returning euro zone central bank ?profits? to Greece.

Germany and its northern European allies have so far rejected any idea of forgiving official loans to Athens.

DEBT RELIEF ?NOT ON TABLE?

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters that a debt cut was legally impossible, not just for Germany but for other euro zone countries, if it was linked to a new guarantee of loans.

?You cannot guarantee something if you?re cutting debt at the same time,? he said. That did not preclude possible debt relief at a later stage if Greece completed its adjustment programme and no longer needs new loans.

The source familiar with IMF thinking said a loan write-off once Greece has established a track record of compliance would be the simplest way to make its debt viable, but other methods such as foregoing interest payments, or lending at below market rates and extending maturities could all help.

The German banking association (BDB) said a fresh ?haircut? or forced reduction in the value of Greek sovereign debt, must only happen as a last resort.

Two European Central Bank policymakers, vice-president Vitor Constancio and executive board member Joerg Asmussen, said debt forgiveness was not on the agenda for now.

The options under consideration included reducing interest on already extended bilateral loans to Greece from the current 150 basis points above financing costs.

How much lower was still being debated ? France and Italy wanted to reduce the rate to 30 basis points (bps), while Germany and some other countries sought a 90 bps margin.

Another option, which could cut Greek debt by almost 17 percent of GDP, was to defer interest payments on loans to Greece from the EFSF, a temporary bailout fund, by 10 years.

The European Central Bank could forego profits on its Greek bond portfolio, bought at a deep discount, cutting the debt pile by a further 4.6 percent by 2020, a document prepared for the ministers? talks last week showed.

Not all euro zone central banks are willing to forego their profits, however, the German Bundesbank among them.

Greece could also buy back its privately-held bonds on the market at a deep discount, with gains from the operation depending on the scope and price. Officials have spoken of a 10 billion euro buy-back at around 30 cents on the euro, that would retire around 30 billion euros of debt, although since the idea was raised the potential gain has fallen as prices have risen.

FORGIVING OFFICIAL LOANS?

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could ?earn? a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

An opinion poll published on Monday showed Greece?s anti-bailout SYRIZA party with a four-percent lead over the Conservatives who won election in June, adding to uncertainty over the future of reforms.

German paper Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday that euro zone ministers were considering a write-down of official loans for Greece from 2015, but gave no sources, and a euro zone official said such an option was never seriously discussed. Researchers blow holes into the Earth to study maar craters and, hopefully, better predict the next big volcano

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A new University at Buffalo study in the journal Geophysical Research Letters examines maar craters, which resemble the bowl-like cavities formed by meteorites but are in some ways more mysterious.

Scientists often can discern pertinent details about meteorites -- when they struck, how large they were, the angle they approached Earth and other information -- by measuring the diameter and volume of the impact crater.

Maar craters, which form when fissures of magma beneath Earth's surface meet groundwater, causing volcanic explosions, are not as telling, scientists say. The possibility of multiple explosions at varying depths led most scientists to believe that measuring a maar's size is not the best way to gauge the energy of individual explosions or determine future hazards.

UB geologist Greg A. Valentine, PhD, and other volcano researchers found instead that examining a maar's shape and the distance it ejects magma, ash and other debris to be a more accurate barometer of the eruption's force. The findings are important, he said, because they could assist scientists in estimating how big future volcano eruptions might be.

"It's something that, up until this point, had only been suspected," said Valentine, a professor of geology and lead author of the Geophysical Research Letters paper. "The simulations we did prove that crater diameter is not a good indicator of explosion energy for these volcanoes." The scientists drew their conclusions on a series of UB-funded experiments conducted last summer at a test site in Ashford, N.Y. They built three test beds of gravel, limestone and asphalt. In the first experiment (see the video below) one charge of TNT and plastic explosive was detonated.

In subsequent experiments, the charge was divided into three parts and detonated individually at different depths. The final dimensions of each crater were about the same. That matters, according to Valentine, because it shows that it's easy to overestimate the energy of explosions if one assumes that the crater comes from one blast, not several.

The dispersal of ejected material differed depending on the location of the charge. For example, the first experiment launched debris more than 50 feet from the crater. Debris from subsequent experiments simulating blasts further underground mostly went up in the air and fell back into the crater or around its rim. As a result, it forced dusty gas -- like the ash that shut down air travel in Iceland and beyond in 2010 -- into the surrounding air. This can be seen in the video below.

Although the experiments provided valuable information, Valentine said they were similar to a practice run. More detailed experiments are being planned for the near future, he said.

Madison Automotive Wants to Brighten Holidays for Car Owners ...

VOL. 127 | NO. 229 | Monday, November 26, 2012

?

By Andy Meek

Updated 12:02PM

Cars are indispensable necessities for many Memphians who don?t live close to their jobs. When they break down, the repairs often are costly and can force some tough choices to be made.

Many drivers are delaying those repairs. That?s according to Memphis-based AutoZone Inc., which says the average car on the road today is a little past the decade mark.

That?s one reason Madison Automotive, a Memphis-based car repair shop, will attempt to make Christmas extra special next month for a few hard-pressed car owners.

The business is reprising a holiday campaign it?s done for three years now. It involves giving back to the community by donating what amounts to thousands of dollars? worth of car repair service to help needy people, families or charities.

Madison Automotive is taking nominations through Dec. 14 of deserving recipients. The point of the nominating letters is simple. They?re supposed to explain why the nominee being written about should get the service.

Submissions will be whittled down to a select few. Napa Auto Parts is donating the parts needed for repairs that are made, and the shop itself is donating the labor and any other parts that don?t come from Napa.

Master technician Mike Meyers works on a cylinder head at Madison Automotive. The company will repair two vehicles for free over the holidays for the neediest, most deserving people. ?

(Photo: Lance Murphey)

Winners in the past have received repairs totaling as much as $25,000 in retail services.

Jeff Moore, who owns the Madison Automotive location at 440 Union Ave. and is the managing partner of a second location, said the business got 300 to 400 responses the first time the effort was done.

?And a group of employees, we sat around one weekend and went through the whole list and narrowed it down to two over a three- or four-day period,? he said. ?We brought those cars in and spent between $3,000 and $5,000 at the retail level on each car. We got them totally fixed up, ready to go through the city inspection process if they needed to be and made them reliable, dependable cars for people who may have lost jobs, had health issues or got screwed on a car by a car lot.?

Moore still recalls some of the stories of those drivers in need. One young woman was still in school and couldn?t afford to repair her car because of her school bills. Another had a sick child, which strained her resources. Still another had lost a job and then seen the car break down.

That person got a new job, but needed to get the car fixed to get to the new job.

?This is just a way for us to give back to the community a little bit after it?s supported us for the last 20-plus years,? Moore said.

Nominations can be mailed to either Madison Automotive location ? on Union Avenue or the location at 2457 Covington Pike.

The shop will announce the recipients of its effort Dec. 21. The vehicles will be repaired and returned to the owner shortly after the New Year.

?This?ll be the third time we?ve done it in the last five years,? Moore said.

Madison Automotive is a Napa AutoCare Center, which provides nationwide warranty on all repairs and works to provide the highest quality in automotive repair.

Examples of services provided at Madison ? a business that dates back to 1992 ? include oil and filter changes; 30,000-, 60,000- and 90,000-mile service; electrical repairs; tune-ups; air conditioner service, and more.

The shop is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

?I took over my original shop, which was originally at McLean and Madison next door to where Neil?s used to be before it burned,? Moore said. ?This past September we moved to a larger facility on Union Avenue, and we quadrupled our size.

?Five years ago Nov. 1 we opened a second shop on Covington Pike. My service manager at the time went in as a partner and opened that store. We?re basically a bumper-to-bumper repair facility for all mechanical and electronic and electrical systems on a car.?

The shop?s creed is ?Making your car care worry-free.?

?We?re just a locally owned and operated small business here in Memphis,? Moore said. ?And we do the best we can and try to treat the customers like we?d want to be treated if we walked into this business.?

How To Win Lottery Scratch Offs

Most lottery players want to know how to win lottery scratch offs games. One would just go to a retailer for a certain state lottery and just buy any scratch off card available. All games are left to chance and the player who just bought scratch off cards must be leaving his bet to chance. That may be true. However, there are some ways on how to win lottery scratch offs games.

The first thing that a serious scratch card player should do is to check out the odds. There are some prizes that have already been claimed. To avoid this pitfall, it's best to check out the websites of state lotteries. These websites have their respective section that one can see who has claimed the major prizes for each game. Checking the state lottery website before playing is a sound idea, as retailers continue to sell tickets after a prize has already been won.

The second step is to determine if what one is paying corresponds to the prizes at stake. One might contemplate if five $1 tickets are worth the $1,000 top prize. However, it could be more sensible to buy a $20 ticket once a month than a $1 ticket daily. The odds are normally found at the back of the ticket or on a person's respective state lottery website. The third step is avoiding the purchase of holiday-themed tickets very far from the holidays being represented. The odds are that these tickets are bought up as gifts during that particular holiday.

In the fourth step, advertising always makes the difference to the seller and the player, as in the case of lottery tickets. Highly-promoted tickets' prizes are usually steeper and there are normally more of them. The fifth step is to enjoy the scratch off game. If one's concern in buying tickets is winning minor prizes, then the individual might consider not buying them. Plus, the individual can avoid gambling altogether. Scratch off tickets must only be a novelty for fun and not a serious way to gamble. It's best to remember that, in gambling, one occasionally wins and almost always loses.

The basic rule in how to win lottery scratch offs is that one should not aimlessly buy tickets as no two games have the same odds. One also has the option to engage in the scratch off game that presents the person the most desirable chances of hitting the jackpot. Thus, the individual must stick to that game to even the odds. A person that plays just for kicks may find out that he or she will have a high probability of losing if one aimlessly buys scratch off tickets.

The truth is that there are a few games that present higher odds of winning than others. While the price may be the same, those scratch card games provide the person with winning outcomes because they have greater odds. The best way to win these games is to know your odds. However, scratch cards are only meant to be for fun; what makes these games enjoyable is the instant gratification of knowing if the person has won a prize or not.

Obama Shops Local Bookstore for Small Business Saturday

WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Barack Obama and his daughters Sasha and Malia did some holiday shopping near Washington today. Dropping in on One More Page Books in Arlington, Va., Obama spent the afternoon outside the White House to promote Small Business Saturday.

The family spent roughly 20 minutes inside the store, spending some of the time quietly conversing with locals. Obama reportedly brought a shopping list on his BlackBerry smartphone.

"Preparation, you know," the president told shop owner Eileen McGervey. "That's how I shop. Michelle, she can go wandering around."

The White House says 15 children's books were purchased at the establishment, that will be given as gifts to family. This is the second year the president has visited a bookstore for the occasion.

Wedged between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday was launched in 2010 to focus on independently owned brick and mortar shops. The occasion was conceived by the American Express corporation, but has since been largely endorsed by business groups and politicians. American Express claims 100 million shoppers hit small businesses last year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.

On Twitter the president would later add, "My family & I started our holiday shopping at a local bookstore on #SmallBizSat. I hope you'll join & shop small this holiday season. -bo"

A member of the traveling press asked the president if this was his effort to keep the United States from going over the looming fiscal cliff.

"Come on, we're doing Christmas shopping," he responded. "Happy Thanksgiving, folks."

London's East End traders form "medieval" guild

LONDON (Reuters) - Street hawkers and independent shop owners in London's East End have come up with a medieval solution to combat the age-old problem of rising rents.

Fearful that the unique character of their area is being eroded by global retail chains, gentrification and soaring property costs, some 200 businesses have formed the East End Trades Guild.

East London's modern manifestation of an ancient city guild - whose history dates back to the 12th century - aims to establish rent review workshops, trade with one another, and build relationships with developers and local authorities.

A 10,000 pound ($15,900) a year rent rise for one local business led to the guild's creation, secretary Krissie Nicolson told Reuters.

"Most of our members are below 10 people and many are one-man operations, but they're what gives colour, light and character to our streets. When they're gone, they're gone," Nicolson said.

Long the impoverished neighbours of the prosperous financial district, badly bombed in World War Two and buffeted by the decline of British industry, the streets once prowled by Jack the Ripper have lately become hot property.

East London has experienced the most dramatic rise in rents in the entire city, up some 13 percent in a year.

The guild's members say that if they are forced out, the London neighbourhood portrayed as a gritty urban landscape filled with working class characters in the "EastEnders" soap opera, will become just another faceless shopping district.

Local toy-shop owner Les Bobrow, whose landlord first insisted on nearly doubling the rent on his small site is a good example of what's happening.

Bobrow's store, with its wooden toys, Venetian masks and garish costumes, has seen a sea of designer fashion shops surround him in the last few years, as small independent shops disappear.

"Only two other long-standing market stores remain," Bobrow said.

(AP) ? As the Big East was being picked apart, Rutgers was looking for a way out and a new place to show off a football program that has been resurrected in the past decade.

Not only did Rutgers find that escape hatch, the Scarlet Knights ended up in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in college sports.

Rutgers joined the Big Ten on Tuesday, leaving the Big East behind and cashing in on the school's investment in a football team that only 10 years ago seemed incapable of competing at the highest level.

The move follows Maryland's announcement a day earlier that it was heading to the Big Ten in 2014. The additions give the Big Ten 14 schools and a presence in lucrative East Coast markets.

Rutgers announced its decision Tuesday at a campus news conference attended by Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany, Rutgers President Robert Barchi and athletic director Tim Pernetti.

"The Big Ten is really where Rutgers belongs," Barchi said. "This is not just a good fit for us athletically, it's a good fit for us academically and as an institution."

Rutgers has been competing in the Big East since 1991. But the league has been torn up by conference realignment, losing three key members last year.

Pernetti had insisted all along that Rutgers would land on its feet, that being a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities and residing in the largest media market in the country would ensure the school wouldn't be cast aside as the landscape of college sports changed.

The Scarlet Knights landed in the best possible spot. A spot that seemed unthinkable a decade ago when Rutgers football was a Big East cellar-dweller.

"It's a transformative day for Rutgers University, and transformative in so many ways," Pernetti said. "This is about collaboration at every level, the perspective the Big Ten institutions have, the balance between academics and athletics, proving over decades and decades that athletics at the highest level and academics at the highest level can coexist. It's the perfect place for Rutgers."

Rutgers left its entry date ambiguous, though clearly the Big Ten and the school would like it to line up with Maryland.

The Big East requires 27 months' notification for departing members. The Scarlet Knights will have to negotiate a deal with the Big East to leave early, the way Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia have done.

"Although we are disappointed that Rutgers has decided to leave the Big East Conference, we wish them well," Big East Commissioner Mike Aresco said in a statement.

In an interview later, Aresco said that the conference would survive. "We'll move judiciously to replace Rutgers, but we had already changed from the small, Northeast model," he said. "We're a national conference now. We became a bigger and better football conference."

The Big East is trying to rebuild itself as a 12-team football league next season, with the addition of Boise State and five other schools. Now the conference is again on the defensive. Connecticut or Louisville could be next to go with the ACC looking to replace Maryland.

Aresco said he had been in touch with the newcomers and they were still on board. He declined to speculate on other members leaving.

Whenever Rutgers enters the Big Ten, it will be the culmination of one of the most remarkable turnarounds in college sports.

In 2002, the Scarlet Knights football team went 1-11 under second-year coach Greg Schiano.

The team, however, steadily improved as the university made the huge financial commitment necessary to support major college football.

Facilities were upgraded, the on-campus stadium was expanded and as Schiano started to win, his salary began to rise into the millions. Not everyone on campus embraced the idea of turning Rutgers into a big-time football school, and it did come with a price.

The expanded and renovated stadium cost of $102 million. The school had hoped to raise the money through private donors, but fell short. Rutgers scaled back plans for the expansion and issued bonds and borrowed money to complete the project.

In 2006, the school had to cut six varsity sports. As the football team has become a consistent winner ? Rutgers has gone to a bowl six of the last seven years ? the athletic department has received tens of millions in subsidies from the university.

Schiano left for the NFL last year, and Rutgers hired longtime assistant Kyle Flood, who has the Scarlet Knights poised to take make another big step. No. 21 Rutgers (9-1) is in position to win its first Big East championship and go to a BCS game for the first time.

In the Big Ten, the revenue Rutgers receives from the league's television and media deals should triple in the short term and could be even more than that in years to come.

The Big Ten reportedly paid its members about $24 million last year, though new members generally do not get a full share of revenue immediately. The Big East's payout to football members last year was $6 million.

In exchange, the Big Ten gets a member in the largest media market in the country, with Rutgers and Maryland as north and south bookends.

"You know, it was a factor," Delany said, referring to the New York television market. "I think it's been a factor that's been a little overplayed to be honest with you."

Losing access to that market is yet another blow to the Big East. The conference is again facing an uncertain future and at the worst possible time. The Big East is trying to negotiate a crucial new television contract.

With the Big East on shaky ground, there has been speculation that Boise State and San Diego State could renege on their commitments to the Big East and stay in the Mountain West.

San Diego State AD Jim Sterk told the North County Times that the Aztecs are not looking to bail.

"It's not great to lose UConn or Rutgers, but if that happens, it gives us an opportunity to have less travel in the Western division," Sterk told the newspaper. "We pick up someone further west, and we're in better shape than yesterday's Big East."

Bill BelichickAP

Patriots All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski suffered a broken arm on the extra point that gave New England its 59th point in Sunday?s 59-24 win over Indianapolis. That has some people asking: Why did Bill Belichick have Gronkowski in the game?

Longtime Boston sports columnist Ron Borges made the point on Comcast SportsNet New England that Belichick?s use of such an important player as Gronkowski on such an unimportant play as an extra point late in the fourth quarter of a game in which the Patriots are leading by 34 points is a mistake.

?I?ve never understood some of these decisions that get made, to use some of these guys on special teams,? Borges said. ?Why are you doing this? I don?t get it. . . . I?ve never understood it. It?s very head-scratching. If it were me I wouldn?t have him on extra points, period.?

If whoever the Patriots put on the extra point team in Gronkowski?s absence over the next few weeks misses a block, and the Patriots have an extra point blocked because of it, then perhaps Belichick would be vindicated. But it seems awfully unlikely that Gronkowski?s absence would hurt the Patriots on special teams. What will hurt the Patriots is that they?re now going to be without one of their best players, probably for a month or two.

In fairness to Belichick, however, Gronkowski is a good blocker, and it makes sense to have him on the field goal unit for that reason, and teams use the same players on extra points as they do on field goals. You could argue that Gronkowski should be pulled from field goals and extra points when the game is no longer in doubt, but Belichick is far from the only coach who would simply leave in the same extra-point personnel that he?d been using all game, no matter the score.

Belichick might, however, be the only coach in the NFL who would have his starting quarterback throwing passes well into the fourth quarter with a four-touchdown lead. Tom Brady stayed in the game even after the Patriots went up 45-17 in the fourth quarter and put it out of reach, and Brady completed a 13-yard pass to Wes Welker with five minutes remaining in the game, with the Patriots leading 52-24. In my own opinion, having Brady risking an injury by throwing a pass late in the fourth quarter with the Patriots up by 28 is more egregious than leaving Gronkowski on the field for an extra point.

But Belichick doesn?t care about my opinion, Borges? opinion or any other opinion. He has always had an unusual approach to blowouts, in that he?d rather step on the opponent?s throat than pull his starters and give his second-stringers some live game action. That?s his right, and even Gronkowski?s injury probably isn?t going to change his mind.

Fleetwood Shy enjoying better draw than co-favourites in 1st Leg Pick 6 Jackpot at Yarmouth

The bookmakers have done the right thing by naming three co-favourites for Monday?s 1st Leg Pick 6 Jackpot at Yarmouth. Not A Bob, Fleetwood Shy and Jell On Jook, all are mighty talented, and deserve equal respect.

Jell On Jook is ticking most of the boxes, and usually earns confidence of many experts. But there are a few concerns as well. Victories seem to have dried up for the black bitch.

On her latest outing here a few days ago, the T. Hunter-trained was fourth on the table. So, expecting her to be dominant is not the way to any riches. The daughter of Droopys Vieri certainly needs to perform out of her skin to do something special.

Not A Bob is a young hound, still learning tricks of the trade. Lack of experience might cost him badly in a pressure game like this. G. Parker?s trainee jumped up to this level following an outstanding A4 triumph here mid October.

The son of Goldmine Ramble was not impressive on his last outing though. He crowded at the first bend, and could not recover thereafter. As a result, he finished fifth behind Blonde Ross.

Enjoying a more favourable draw, Fleetwood Shy is likely to beat this opposition, including the two giants. The black bitch is standing in the blue box, and will have a great chance of taking an early advantage.

There are some out-of-form hounds in the pack, who are likely to get crowded. So, if D. Carter?s trainee avoids mess which she has a great of chance of doing, her chances will be brighter than many. The daughter of Honcho Croppy won her penultimate race by a length?s distance. She crowded twice last time and as a result, failed terribly.

Besides the abovementioned trio, three clever hounds have made it to the race. Their names are: Blonde Ross, Em Millie and Ice Cool Light. Blonde Ross is running wide these days. The draw will help him avoid any inside crowding, but still an impeccable run is required.

Em Millie has not yet settled down at this level, and carries no chance of finishing among top-3. Ice Cool Light?s poor strike rate makes him one of the weak contenders.

Reprise : A step towards a civilised society : parents should have the ...

In a week when the United Kingdom's parliament will be considering whether to allow prisoners the right to vote, we make no apology for returning this item to a prominent position on our home page. While thinking of this readers who did not see last week's screening of Michael Winterbottom's film,?Everyday: the art of growing up in real time?about the the experiences of a family when the father is sentenced to a long period in prison, may still do so ?on the Channel 4 iplayer.

Reprise : ?A step towards a civilised society : parents should have the right to vote even if they are prisoners

On May 22nd, 2012, the European Court of Human Rights made a ruling that prisoners in the United Kingdom should have the right to vote in local and general elections. It has given the United Kingdom government 6 months in which to implement the ruling. The court's judgment does allow government ministers to determine which categories of prisoners should be disenfranchised.

Setting aside any feelings there may be about international courts influencing legislation in the United Kingdom, the judgment in our view is one for the good. This website is concerned with the nurturing and parenting of children. Many prisoners are Mums and Dads and continue to care about their children even when they are incarcerated and many prisoners who are parents try very hard, in difficult cicumstances, to keep in touch with their children through correspondence, prison visits and through a number excellent initiatives like for instance,?Storybook Dads.

Prisoners who are parents should retain the right to vote, not only as part of their preparation for rehabilitation to the world outside of prison but also so that they are encouraged to sustain their interest in, and their attachment to, their children through the ballot box. They should be allowed to vote for political representatives who they believe will support new legislation which relates to the lives of their children and their partners living outside the prison walls.

It should go without saying that we sympathise with and support those who have been the victims of a prisoner's crime, including their relatives and friends. A prison sentence can never make the crime that has been committed any less wrong, but it is the method we use as a community - rightly or wrongly - to punish prisoners for certain crimes. They are required to give up periods of their lives in order to make recompense for their crimes. Convicted criminals are taken away from our community and lose their freedom. For the majority of their living hours they are locked up in a cell. They lose the right to see their loved ones except on rare, supervised and time limited occasions. Surely this is punishment enough and prison sentences, if they are to be in the least effective must be proactively rehabilitative. While there may be exceptional instances which would not make it possible or safe, prisoners should feel when they leave prison that they will be accepted back in their home communities and that they will be supported to the extent that they feel they a stand a fair chance of a loving and purposeful future with their children and partners.

It is a sad state of affairs that many of our political leaders, including the United Kingdom prime minister are so set against the European court's judgement. The enfranchisement of prisoners is a symbol of an inclusive community determined to ensure that those who are punished by having their freedom taken away should not feel utterly abandoned but can trust they still have a worth for their families and for our community. Giving prisoners a vote is a step towards achieving a civilised society.
