Manchester United fans group slams Glazers' IPO plan

LONDON (Reuters) - A group of Manchester United fans accused the American Glazer family of milking the English Premier League soccer team for cash after IPO terms revealed they planned to take half of the proceeds of its flotation.

Fans from the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) questioned why all of the money being raised was not being used to reduce a debt pile that they say is holding back the team's performances on the field.

The club and the Glazers each will be selling half the IPO shares in an offering that will raise as much as $333 million. The club's proceeds from the IPO will be used to reduce its debt of 423 million pounds as of March 31 to 345.4 million pounds ($664 million to $543 million).

"Supporters are going to be very angry about this," said Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of MUST, a group lobbying for fans to play a greater role in the ownership of the club.

"The Glazers have already cost United more than 550 million pounds in debt related fees and now another slap in the face as they help themselves to half of the proposed IPO proceeds," he added.

"Clearly this has nothing to do with benefits for Manchester United and is all about giving the Glazers quick access to desperately needed cash at the expense of our football club."

MUST has fought a long campaign against the Glazers, who bought the club for 790 million pounds in a highly-leveraged deal in 2005 and also own NFL team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Discontent has grown after United, English champions a record 19 times, failed to win a trophy last season - their first barren year since 2005.

They missed out on the title to local rivals Manchester City, whose owner Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, one of Abu Dhabi's ruling family, has ploughed an estimated 800 million pounds into the club.

A recent survey commissioned by United said it had 659 million followers globally, almost one in 10 of the population, but it still remains at the mercy of performances on the pitch, with revenues hit last season by an early exit from the lucrative European Champions' League.

However, the club's global appeal was underlined when it signed a new seven-year shirt sponsorship deal with General Motors' Chevrolet. The deal begins in 2014 and one source said it could be worth up to $600 million.

BIZ: Apple and Samsung Square Off Over Patents | SNS Post

Published on July 30th, 2012

Story Excerpt:

(NBC News)? Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Monday morning in a high stakes patent battle between Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the culmination of over a year of pretrial jousting with billions of dollars in the balance.

Apple and Samsung, the world?s largest consumer electronics corporations, are waging legal war around the world, accusing each other of patent violations as they vie for supremacy in a fast-growing market for mobile devices.

The fight began last year when Apple sued Samsung in a San Jose, Calif.,?federal court, accusing the South Korean company of slavishly copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung countersued. The stakes are high, with Samsung facing potential U.S. sales bans of its Galaxy smartphones and tablet computers, and Apple in a pivotal test of its worldwide patent litigation strategy.

?In some sense the big part of the case is not Apple?s demands for damages but whether Samsung gets to sell its products,? said Mark A. Lemley, a Stanford Law School professor and director of the Stanford Program in Law, Science, and Technology.

Lemley also said a verdict in Apple?s favor could send a message to consumers that Android-based products such as Samsung?s are in legal jeopardy. A verdict in Samsung?s favor, especially if it prevails on its demands that Apple pay its asking price to certain transmission technology it controls, could lead to higher-priced Apple products.

Dementia: Autoantibodies damage blood vessels in the brain

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? The presence of specific autoantibodies of the immune system is associated with blood vessel damage in the brain. These findings were made by Marion Bimmler, a graduate engineer of medical laboratory diagnostics at the Max Delbr?ck Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch and Dr. Peter Karczewski of the biotech company E.R.D.E.-AAK-Diagnostik GmbH in studies on a rat model. The researchers' results suggest that autoimmune mechanisms play a significant role in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.

Antibodies are the defense molecules of the body's immune system against foreign invaders. If the antibodies cease to distinguish between "foreign" and "self," they attack the cells of the own body, and are thus referred to as autoantibodies. These can trigger autoimmune diseases. Using MR angiography and other methods, Marion Bimmler and her colleagues have now shown that the autoantibodies bind to specific surface proteins (alpha1 andrenergic receptors) of vascular cells and thereby damage the blood vessels of the brain. The reason: The autoantibodies generate a continual stimulation of the receptor and at the same time trigger an increase in intracellular calcium ion levels. As a result, the blood vessel walls thicken, and blood flow to the brain is disturbed.

First encouraging results after removal of autoantibodies by immunoadsorption

In earlier studies, Marion Bimmler and her research team examined blood samples of patients with Alzheimer's or vascular dementia and showed that half of them had comparable autoantibodies. A first clinical trial together with Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin is currently ongoing with a collective of patients with Alzheimer's or vascular dementia. The patients were divided into two groups -- a small group whose autoantibodies were removed from the blood via immunoadsorption and a control group that did not receive this treatment. Until now, over an observation period of 6 and subsequently 12 months, the patient group who had undergone immunoadsorption improved in their memory performance and in their ability to cope with their everyday lives.

In contrast, the condition of the patients who did not receive immunoadsorption treatment and continued to have autoantibodies in their blood deteriorated dramatically. Now the researchers are planning further clinical trials with larger numbers of patients.

DiNapoli: MTA Favored Apple In Real Estate Bid | New York Daily ...

The MTA was playing favorites with Apple for real estate for prime real estate, according to an audit from the state comptroller's office.

dinapoli1.jpegThe MTA worked behind the scenes with Apple on a deal to lease space in Grand Central Terminal more than a year before issuing a request for proposals on the space, the audit found.

"While Apple may turn out to be a good tenant, the MTA set a troubling precedent when it played favorites and gave Apple a competitive edge over others for the Grand Central space," DiNapoli said in a statement.

According to the audit timeline, Apple and the MTA Real Estate Department began discussing the space in November of 2008. Metrazur, the restaurant that owned the space, then approached Apple in July, 2009 about a buyout. Apple? paid agreed to a $2 million advance on the buy out five days before the space was publicly advertised in 2011.

A 2010 audit by the comptroller's office revealed issues with the MTA's real estate practices, and a second audit revealed that only two of 12 recommendations had been implemented, according to the comptroller's office.

"Apple was directly involved in setting the terms of the lease and given exclusive access to information more than a year before any other vendor knew the Grand Central location was available," DiNapoli said. "Our prior audit revealed problems with how the MTA managed and leased out its vast real estate portfolio. It is clear that more scrutiny is needed to ensure the best deal is struck."

Jeffrey Rosen, the MTA's director of real estate, issued a letter to the audit director saying that the MTA disagreed strongly with the results of the audit.

"The central premise of the critique contained in the Draft Report is that the fairness of the MTA's competitive process was compromised by MTA's knowledge of negotiations between Apple and Metrazur, and by the MTA's participation in concurrent discussions with each of such parties preceding the issuance of the RFT," Rosen wrote. "The MTA sharply disputes this premise, and we are confident that we scrupulously observed not only the letter, but also the spirit of the Public Authorities Law and our published leasing guidelines."

Rosen also suggested that "no buyout of Metrazur's lease would have been possible" without discussions between the restaurant and Apple prior to the RFP release.

DiNapoli is recommending more oversight of public authority contracts of more than $1 million. Currently, only non-completive contracts more than $1 million can be reviewed by the State Comptroller, but this change would make all contracts reviewable prior to being finalized.

A Guide To Successful Commercial Real Estate | LoansTop20.com

People are attracted to commercial real estate investing for a number of reasons. Your reasons will likely be determined by your current knowledge and goals. The more information you have, the greater your earnings will be through your commercial real estate dealings. Below, you?ll find some great tips to help you start your commercial real estate career, or to add to your already wide breadth of knowledge.

Buying commercial properties requires plenty of perseverance and calmness. Never rush into an investment. The property you buy in a hurry might not deliver what you need to reach your goals, leaving you to regret the purchase afterward. Plan to keep your eye on your market for as long as a year if you want to find the right investment.

Put your energy toward one investment at a time. Focus on a single type, should it be apartments, offices, retail, land, etc. It is best to be able give each investment your undivided attention to ensure the best possible results. Becoming a guru in one investment category is preferable to minimal success spread across multiple investments.

Get a commercial loan approval before looking at commercial property. Consult with friends and fellow investors to manifest a short list that includes the optimum lenders of your community. Research all the lenders on your list and determine which one you?d like to work with. Talk to the lender and make arrangements for financing prior to purchasing your first property. If you are willing to devote the time to covering all of your bases, you can improve your chances of qualifying for a loan.

Get clear and precise square footage numbers for any space. Two different measurements are commonly used in commercial real estate. One is a measurement of the usable square footage based on the available square feet based upon space that can be used by the business. The other measurement is total square feet, which will include walls and spaces that cannot be inhabited. By knowing both measurements, you will have a smoother time dealing with the property.

Before settling on a broker, determine if they negotiate aggressively or rationally. Know what sort of education and background they have. Choose a broker who only uses ethical methods and can help you to get only the best deals. Request evidence of previous negotiations, both successes and failures.

Social media is an important tool for keeping brokers and investors appraised of your services. After completion of a transaction, you should work to cultivate an online presence.

The seller is required to disclose any information they know regarding any possible environmental hazards. Hazardous waste on the property is a large area of concern. Regardless of whether or not you caused the problem, as the landowner it is your responsibility to fix it.

Before buying, make sure that you consult a tax adviser for assistance. A tax adviser can let you know how much money the buildings will cost you, and the amount of your income that will be taxable. The adviser can also assist you in finding areas with comparatively lower tax rates.

You should try to understand the NOI metric. Success means that your income outweighs your operating costs.

Scrutinize any disclosures made by a real estate agent whom you intend to hire. One thing you should specifically watch out for is dual agency. Dual agency in real estate is when the agency works for both parties. In the case of a rental situation, the agency represents the landlord and the tenant. Both parties need to clearly understand that the transaction is being handled by a dual agent and consent to this fact.

Don?t underestimate your relationship with private lenders or investors when you buy commercial real estate. Often, commercial real estate is sold before ever being listed as being for sale. The only way you might find out about it is through the network of people you have carefully developed over time. Private lenders and investors are often in the know and can be key to informing you of a potentially good deal.

As stated earlier, there are a lot of exceptional reasons to look into commercial real estate investments, but being knowledgeable on the opportunities is important. Apply the tips from the article above to your commercial real estate needs and you are sure to be on your way to maximizing your profits.

Colo. theater lacked security, unlike some peers

DENVER (AP) ? The Colorado movie theater complex that was the scene of a gunman's massacre this month didn't have any uniformed security guards on duty the night of the shooting, even though other theaters operated by the same company did provide such protection for the busy premiere of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

It's impossible to know whether guards ? often off-duty police officers ? at the Aurora Century 16 would have spotted the suspected gunman, James Holmes, and thwarted the attack that left 12 moviegoers dead and dozens wounded on July 20.

Officers hired as guards are generally armed and usually spend their time roaming the complex, checking bags or dealing with minor disputes.

Cinemark provided off-duty police guards at the Aurora theater on busy Friday and Saturday nights. As for other nights of the week, theater operators decide on a case-by-case basis whether to hire security, depending on the likelihood of trouble. The attack came early Friday, shortly after the midnight screening of the Batman film began.

Larry Lowak, whose son Brent was among the wounded, said security personnel on the scene possibly could have stopped the gunman, and he was dismayed to learn that guards weren't on hand.

"If you bring in security on Friday or Saturday, you sure as hell want to bring it in for this particular function," Lowak said.

Plano, Texas-based Cinemark, which operates the Aurora theater, declined to explain why guards weren't provided in Aurora that night and declined to discuss safety policies in general.

Through interviews with police officers and officials outside the theater company, The Associated Press was able to identify places around the country that did use armed security workers for the July 19-20 Batman showings ? including places like Beaumont, Texas; Lake Charles, La., and Tupelo, Miss.

Some other locations, including a Cinema Century 16 theater in the western Denver suburb of Lakewood, did not have security.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates has said that the Cinemark in Aurora normally uses off-duty officers to provide security on weekend nights but did not have any working for the July 19 showings that went into the next morning. The theater does not have an unusually high record of complaints or crimes, police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said.

In Moosic, Pa., Cinemark has worked for years with off-duty officers from the local police department ? typically on Fridays and Saturdays ? and authorities said they were asked to provide two officers on July 19 because the midnight showing was likely to be a major event.

"If they're expecting large crowds, they call our department for additional police presence," said Moosic Borough Police Officer James Giehl.

Two major multiplexes in Amarillo, Texas, including one Cinemark facility, also ensured that off-duty uniformed police officers were present for the first screenings of the Batman film. Amarillo Police Cpl. Jerry Neufeld said that the off-duty officers work in pairs; the town's theaters made a point of asking for them on the busy opening night.

There were no incidents at the screenings, and Neufeld said he heard that people were, as always, happy to see people there to deal with any dangers.

"When they're there, they're visible, people see them and people come in and say, 'hey man, we're glad you're here,'" Neufeld said. "It gives people a sense of calm."

The Aurora shooting has stirred discussion about appropriate security precautions at gathering places commonly considered safe from the cares and worries of the outside world. Experts say that security at public venues has increased substantially over the past decade, but they also note that it's impossible to maintain perfect safety at all times.

Officials have said the Aurora shooting suspect bought a ticket to the midnight showing and went into the theater as part of the crowd. A federal law enforcement official said suspect Holmes is believed to have propped open an exit door in the theater as the movie was playing, donned protective ballistic gear, re-entered about a half-hour into the film and opened fire.

Aurora police said the suspect tossed two gas canisters into the crowd and had an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun, and two .40-caliber Glock handguns.

Some theaters have added security guards for all nights of the week since the shooting, and police departments around the country have also conducted extra patrols that focus to movie theaters, though it's not clear if those shifts will be permanent. AMC Theatres has barred people from wearing masks or bringing fake weapons inside its buildings.

Many theaters, including the Cinemark in Aurora, prohibit patrons from bringing in their concealed weapons they use for personal protection.

That irks people like Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, who said that he has refused to go to Aurora theater because of that ban.

"What could have stopped this is law-abiding citizens being allowed to carry," Brown insisted.

Lowak, the father of the shooting survivor, also said he believes people carrying concealed weapons might have helped limit the bloodshed.

But Hubert Williams, former head of the Newark police department and president of the Police Foundation, said that the idea that average citizens with guns could keep a theater safe only makes sense "on a piece of paper."

"Reality is much more complicated. What if you pull a gun out, take aim and someone else thinks you're the shooter?" he asked. "Would you stand up against an AR-15, AK-47 military-style assault weapon? Give me a break."

Archival Hudson's Bay Co. film restored, tours Canada

Dr. Peter Geller visited London in 1996 on a hunch. Lucky for both him and his research, his gut feeling turned out to be correct.

?While most people go to London to see the sights and watch the theatre, I sat in an archive and watched a film,? he says with a laugh.

That film was The Romance of the Far Fur Country, a silent documentary shot by filmmakers hired by the Hudson?s Bay Company (HBC). The silent documentary was filmed in 1919, premiered to a Winnipeg audience in 1920 in honour of the HBC?s 250th anniversary, but then fell out of the public eye.

However, Geller, the Vice Provost and Associate Vice-President Academic at University of the Fraser Valley, suspected the reels might be housed in the National Film and Television Archives at the British Film Institute. Sure enough, upon his arrival in London, he was able to track down the film in the archives. The only problem? It was far from a finished film: the footage was completely out of order.

Geller?s research has long revolved around the visual history of the Canadian North, which this film fit into perfectly. After watching and studying the footage in London, he included a chapter about The Romance of the Far Fur Country in his 2004 book, Northern Exposures: Photographing and Filming the Canadian North, 1920-1945.

Spurred by the interest of Geller and filmmaker Kevin Nikkel, the footage was returned from Britain to the HBC Archives in Manitoba earlier this year. The footage was digitized prior to its return to Canada in the fall.

But their work didn?t end there. Now captivated by the film footage, Geller and Nikkel have been working together to piece the film back into some kind of order so it can once again be shown to a Canadian audience.

?There is eight hours of raw footage, which the original filmmakers edited into a two-hour-long documentary,? Geller notes. ?The footage we found in the London archive isn?t the final film ? it?s a jumble of images and out of order captions. There?s a lot of work to be done to piece it back together.?

The team has now assembled the footage into a 30 minute film, which is being shown across Canada in the coming months. It?s already played in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton and several communities in northern Alberta, including Fort Chipewyan, and is coming to Vancouver on July 31. After that, it will travel to Victoria and onto Alert Bay.

Geller says he hopes to help bring the film to as many communities as possible ? especially the communities the original film team visited in 1919.

?We?re basically retracing the steps of the film. We?re making an effort to return the footage to the communities, since it was never screened in the communities it was shot,? Geller explains. ?It?s this huge, cross-Canada odyssey, and we want to connect that back to its roots.?

The original film crew started in Montreal, travelled up the St. Lawrence to Labrador, up to what is now Nunavut, into northern Ontario, and then over to northern Alberta, and finally over and up the sunshine coast to Alert Bay. Geller and Nikkel hope to follow at least some of that journey.

?It?s a fascinating film that helped to draw Canada together,? Geller says. ?The HBC hoped to show how they, as a company, had helped bind Canada together ? connecting Inuit and other northern Aboriginal peoples to traders and city dwellers like the original Winnipeg audience. For the Hudson?s Bay Company, it was a celebration of its history and showed the audience the variety of culture across Canada. And as a document of its time, it is important to recognize how the film is a part of the history of colonization, and both presented and shaped stereotypical views of Aboriginal people.?

The film will be showing at Vancity Theatre in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 31 at 7 pm. Geller and Nikkel will both be attending, and will offer a short Q & A period after the screening.

Mass. dad shoots his 2 kids, 1 fatally, kills self

(AP) ? A man who had recently separated from his wife shot his two children, killing his 7-year-old daughter, before committing suicide, prosecutors said.

A family member called police Saturday night after finding the bodies of 41-year-old Daryl Benway and his daughter, Abigail, in the master bedroom of their two-story Oxford home, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said.

Benway's 9-year-old son, Owen, was found shot in the head in the kitchen and was taken to UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center in serious condition. Owen has been in pediatric intensive care, a spokesman for Early said Sunday. He said he had no additional information about Owen Benway's condition, and a hospital spokeswoman would not comment.

Benway's wife, Kelleen, returned home after the shootings, unaware of what had happened, and found a swarm of police cruisers and television crews, Early said. She was taken to the children's hospital, where authorities told her the fates of her children and husband.

Neighbors told the Telegram & Gazette that Daryl Benway's brother Shawn lived on the first floor of the home with his wife and mother. Shawn Benway called 911 to report the shootings, Early said.

Early said he couldn't speculate on a motive. He said the Benways separated weeks ago but were still married.

No restraining orders had been filed against Daryl Benway, and he had no criminal record, the DA said. He had a gun license that expired in 1999, Early said.

On Daryl Benway's Facebook page, his profile picture posted in December showed him with his family in front of a Christmas tree. He described the woman next to him as "my Beautiful wife Kelleen." Owen stood in front of him in a white dress shirt and red plaid tie, while brown-haired Abigail wore a black and white dress with a black hair bow.

Daryl Benway listed his place of employment as TJX Cos., which operates discount retailers TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods, as well as Ross Stores Inc.

Paycheck Fairness Act stalls in Congress ? Business Management ...

The Obama administration?s top workplace legislative initiative this year?the Paycheck Fairness Act?died last month when Senate Democrats failed to muster the needed votes.

Supporters say the bill would help close the pay gap between men and women. Business-backed opponents say it would add new restrictions on employers, including putting the burden on them to show that men-women pay gaps were caused by reasons other than gender, and ease the requirements for bringing lawsuits.

Hindujas to foray into India's real estate sector | IndiaPost

LONDON: The Hinduja Group, with a global presence in core sectors like oil and gas, automotive, power, IT, banking and finance, has announced a major foray into the real estate sector in India involving an investment of up to USD 15 billion.
Just back from a visit to India, the Group Chairman S P Hinduja said here that the Indian economy ?with its underlying strengths could become a beacon of hope in an otherwise bleak global environment.?
The Group has acquired a land bank of over 3,500 acres in metros like Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore for development of integrated residential and commercial townships, SEZs, with hospitality, healthcare and related facilities, he said.
These projects will involve an investment of USD 10 billion to USD 15 billion over the next five years, according to Hinduja.
The group was also looking at a portfolio of 10,000 MW in the power sector in the medium-term, he said. Implementation of a 1000 MW project is already under progress, Hinduja said.
Expressing optimism over the state of the Indian economy, Hinduja said its fundamentals remained strong and it has the potential to bounce back to high growth of 8 to 9 per cent per annum.
?The slowdown currently experienced by the economy is largely due to external conditions and not, as a section of the business community and media say, by coalition politics, lack of leadership, corruption etc,? he said.
Hinduja said that the ruling and opposition parties in India were united in their resolve to reverse the present deceleration of growth momentum and make India more competitive in the global economy.
He also noted that India continued to enjoy great credibility in international forums and among global leaders, ?which is a major plus.?
The leading UK-based industrialist said that non-resident Indians (NRIs) continue to repose confidence in the country with their remittances touching around USD 60 billion last year, the highest for the developing countries, including China.
He is also confident that India will go for more of economic reforms and liberalization and will not revert to a state-led model.
Hinduja also highlighted the challenge faced by India from the menace of corruption and black money.
?The main causes of generation of black money have been the requirement for funds to meet the expenses of political parties and to fight elections at local/state/national levels; the need for making illicit payments to secure government contracts and influence government policies etc,? he said.
?This is a cancer which must be addressed. Unstructured, non-institutional political funding is the root of corruption in India. Electoral reforms may be introduced to regularize and make political parties accountable for funds received,? he said.
He also said that state funding of political parties? election expenditure can be part of a large scheme of political, electoral and taxation reform to stop the flow of money into parallel economy.
He pointed out that many developed countries have opted for 20-30 per cent tax to make black money stashed abroad accountable.
?India could also consider entering into similar agreements with foreign countries so that the unaccounted wealth abroad can come to India and taxed. Such funds could help reduce India?s burgeoning fiscal deficit,? he said.

Madonna Blames "Thugs," Media for Negative Concert Reaction

Madonna played a 45-minute concert in Paris on Thursday night that concluded with attendees showering the stage with debris and shouting insults at the Material Girl.

Was it due to the duration of the show? To Madonna's slamming of National Front party member Marine Le Pen as a Nazi? Or was it simply an overreaction by the media?

Guess which option Madonna has chosen...

In a statement on her official website, the iconic artist has responded to the controversy with:

"Playing the Olympia was a magical moment for me and it was real treat to do this special show for my fans and be so close to them. Unfortunately at the end of the show - after I left the stage - a few thugs who were not my fans rushed the stage and started throwing plastic bottles pretending to be angry fans.

"The press reports have focused on this and not the joyous aspect of the evening. But nothing can take away or ruin this very special evening for me and my fans. When I looked out in the audience, everyone I saw had a smile on their face. I look forward to having this wonderful experience again."

Fair enough. Let's just hope she keeps all guns at home when that day comes.

Dubai developer Emaar posts steep 2Q profit gain

(AP) ? The Dubai developer of the world's tallest building says it believes the emirate's battered property market is starting to improve as its second-quarter profits more than doubled.

Emaar Properties said Sunday it earned 614 million dirhams ($167 million) from April through June. That compares with 250 million dirhams it made in the same period last year.

Revenue edged up 3 percent to 2.1 billion dirhams.

The developer of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper cited gains at its retail and hospitality businesses, though last year's second quarter earnings were hurt by a one-time charge. Profits were up 45 percent without that adjustment.

Chairman Mohamed Alabbar says he believes struggling Dubai's property market "is turning around, led by the robust performance of key growth sectors including aviation, retail, hospitality, tourism and foreign trade."

Mysterious nodding disease afflicts young Ugandans

Uganda this week hosts a four-day international conference on nodding syndrome that health officials believe will lead to a clearer understanding of the mysterious disease. The disease is calling nodding syndrome, or nodding head disease, because those who have it nod their heads and sometimes go into epileptic-like fits. (AP) ? Augustine Languna's eyes welled up and then his voice failed as he recalled the drowning death of his 16-year-old daughter. The women near him looked away, respectfully avoiding the kind of raw emotion that the head of the family rarely displayed.

"What is traumatizing us," he said after regaining his composure, "is that the well where she died is where we still go for drinking water."

Joyce Labol was found dead about three years ago. As she bent low to fetch water from a pond a half mile from Languna's compound of thatched huts, an uncontrollable spasm overcame her. The teen was one of more than 300 young Ugandans who have died as a result of the mysterious illness that is afflicting more and more children across northern Uganda and in pockets of South Sudan.

The disease is called nodding syndrome, or nodding head disease, because those who have it nod their heads and sometimes go into epileptic-like fits. The disease stunts children's growth and destroys their cognition, rendering them unable to perform small tasks. Some victims don't recognize their own parents.

Ugandan officials say some 3,000 children in the East African country suffer from the affliction. Some caregivers even tie nodding syndrome children up to trees so that they don't have to monitor them every minute of the day.

Beginning Monday, Uganda hosts a four-day international conference on nodding syndrome that health officials believe will lead to a clearer understanding of the mysterious disease.

World Health Organization officials in Uganda said the conference will be attended by about 120 scientists from all over the world. Anthony Mbonye, of Uganda's Ministry of Health, said the conference will allow scientists to share knowledge about the disease.

Scientists are working to find the cause of the disease, which is stretching health care capacities here and testing the patience of a community looking for answers as to why it attacks mostly children between the ages of 5 and 15, why it's concentrated in certain communities, and whether it is contagious.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has been investigating nodding syndrome at the request of the Ugandan government, has ruled out 36 possible causes since 2009 and is carrying out a clinical trial for potential treatments. In mid-February the lead investigator said on a visit to Uganda that there is now "clear evidence that this is an epidemic" about which very little is known.

"We did repeated exams on several of these children and found that some of the children had stayed the same, some of the children had gotten worse, none of the children had improved," said Scott Dowell, director of CDC's Division of Global Disease Detection and Emergency Response.

Researchers are focusing on the connection between nodding syndrome and the parasite that causes river blindness, Dowell said, though it is not yet clear there are any links. Onchocerciasis, or river blindness, has been around for a long time, but nodding syndrome is somewhat new, he said. "And we also know that there are many parts of the world that have onchocerciasis but have no evidence of nodding syndrome."

Many residents here in the northernmost reaches of Uganda, nearly 300 miles from Kampala, say they think the disease is rooted in violence. Locals have said it's the only explanation for the disease's prevalence in places most affected by the legacy of a brutal war carried out by Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group. Kony and the group have waged a campaign of murder, rape, and the abduction of boys and girls who go on to become killing machines or sex slaves.

"We the Acholi have suffered a lot, and I am asking why," said Benjamin Ojwang, an Anglican bishop in the area. "In the absence of Kony, we were beginning to find relative peace. When are our people going to rest?"

A disease as strange as nodding head gives people a sense of hopelessness and helplessness, said N.K. Okun-Okaka, a retired veterinarian who has the status of a village elder.

"They can only do something about it if they know the cause, how it is spread. My heart goes out to these children. We feel very sorry and we feel like we do not live in the modern world," he said.

Ugandan health officials have known about the disease for nearly 10 years. By 2006, after Kony was repulsed from Ugandan territory, health care providers had diagnosed several cases of epilepsy without stopping to ask why.

"This thing is old," said Emmanuel Tenywa, a World Health Organization official in northern Uganda. "After the war there were so many cases of epilepsy. That's how this thing started."

Yet serious steps to manage the disease were taken only in the last year after a group of parliamentarians accused the authorities of criminal negligence. The government then announced a $2.2 million plan. But the cash has been slow to reach treatment centers.

Sick children have remained stuck in villages where biting poverty sometimes combines with the inattention of caregivers. Children have been badly burned after falling in fires. Others have died falling into water, like Languna's 16-year-old girl. And it is common to see children tethered to trees by caregivers too busy to look after them.

In Languna's household alone, eight children suffer from the disease, including a 12-year-old boy whose growth is so stunted he looks half his age. Languna has given up on all of them.

"We lost a child who was so promising," he said. "But what pains us more is that these ones you see are destined to (die)."

Investigators said they are not certain the disease is non-communicable, but they advise against alarm.

In the absence of definitive answers, some here have been taking matters in their own hands by isolating the sick. At the Okidi primary school, which Labol attended before she drowned, teachers once attempted to segregate the children and then dropped the idea after being criticized. Since 2007 there have been 141 cases of nodding disease at the school, with seven ending in death.

Now sick children rarely come to school, science teacher Paska Atto said.

Luke Nyeko, the Kitgum chairman, is frequently stopped by parents demanding to know what exactly their children are suffering from or why they cannot be cured.

"I feel very bad, very bad," he said of encounters with distressed parents. "It's a bit tricky because you can't go and lie to them. We just tell them that we don't know the condition."

Eliminating Unsecured Debt Makes Good ... - Debt management guide

Author: admin | Date: 07/29/2012 | Please Comment!

For any businessman it is of utmost importance that he should know how to manage a debt relief in a recession. We all are facing a lot of financial difficulties under the prevailing economic circumstances the world over. Most small businesses that we see flourishing are the ones who have dealt with their financial issues in a sensible manner. Like thousands of other entrepreneurs around, if you are also looking for ways to find debt relief in a recession you can get some professional help to resolve matters quickly.

What in my view makes perfectly good business sense is to spend a little to save a lot. This is what getting professional help for getting elimination actually means. All you will have to do is try to locate some trustworthy debt relief network online and opt for a free counseling session. You will get all the necessary information regarding getting a settlement with your financers against your unsecured debts. These networks also provide links to legitimate debt relief companies who in return for a fee will represent you and will negotiate debt elimination for you with your financers.

As a businessman you should appreciate the fact that if you manage to get elimination up to 50% or beyond you will be saving a lot and in return you have to pay some fee which may be at the maximum 10% to 15% of the total amount eliminated. This is not a difficult calculation for anyone to do. The fact is that you will emerge victorious in the end.

Getting rid of a major portion of your debt is something that every entrepreneur dreams about every day. Exercising your option of getting a debt relief definitely makes good business sense even if it means paying a small fee.

Statistics show that those who try to save up on the fee by going into self-negotiation with their finance company usually end up getting far less elimination than what a professional gets them.

Everyone must realize the fact that all financial matters are very delicate and have lots of legal strings attached. One incorrect statement or one wrong move on your part can lead to dire consequences. Like any other legal issue that you let an attorney handle, you should also let an attorney handle your debt settlement for you in a professional manner.

Getting out of debt through a debt settlement process is currently very popular but you need to know where to locate the best performing programs in order to get the best deals. To compare debt settlement companies it would be wise to visit a free debt relief network which will locate the best performing companies in your area for free.

The queen got a bird's eye view of the Olympic Park complex atop the 377-foot (115-meter) Orbit sculpture beside the stadium, where on Friday night she officially opened the 2012 Games. Her husband, Prince Philip, and London Mayor Boris Johnson accompanied her as she rode up two floors in the sculpture's elevator to meet designer Anish Kapoor.

Dressed in a royal blue silk dress, crepe coat and matching hat, the queen could be heard remarking at the views of the London skyline and countryside up to 20 miles (32 kilometers) away. She was also wearing a brooch given to her in 1948, the last time London hosted the Olympics and four years before her accession to the throne.

Johnson said the queen had told him she was "very, very impressed with the success of her first film appearance, her first dramatic venture. It was very funny and seems to have gone down particularly well with the international audiences."

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 86-year-old monarch agreed last year to participate in Danny Boyle's film portion of his four-hour opening ceremony extravaganza. Filming took place at the palace in March and April and featured two of the queen's corgi dogs: Monty and Holly.

Boyle's production involved Daniel Craig, the current James Bond, striding into Buckingham Palace to escort his VIP guest to the Olympic ceremony. Many watching had expected a famous actress to play the role of the queen, and untold thousands in the audience audibly gasped as the real-life queen was seen to swivel round in her desk chair and declare: "Good evening, Mr. Bond."

At the end of the film segment, two stuntmen dressed as Bond and the queen parachuted from a helicopter into the stadium, and moments later Elizabeth and Philip emerged in the stands.

Boyle told NBC television that the queen had been a natural. "You don't have to tell her something twice," he said. "She picks it up straight away, about cameras and angles."

The scenes were filmed in March and April, after the queen agreed to take part last year.

The queen offered more surprises Saturday as she paid a walking visit to the athletes village and met about 150 members of the British Olympic team. Spectators took in the scene from balconies draped in Union Jack flags.

"For her to come through and meet the athletes, and see where we're living, it was amazing," said Rose Anderson, 24, a member of the women's basketball team.

"She went inside one of the athletes' bedrooms and chatted to us. It was just awesome, especially after last night," she said, referring to the opening ceremony. "Last night will never be topped. I'll never get an experience like that again, and then this will never be topped either."

The queen also met athletes from other nations in the dining hall.

"She's beautiful," said Jess Fox, who competes for Australia in the canoe slalom. "We saw her from afar last night in the stadium, but it was amazing to see her like this."
