Leeds teenager murdered in street for drug debt, jury told

A TEENAGER was killed after being chased through the streets and stabbed repeatedly in a daytime attack after a row over drugs, a jury heard.

A court heard Kieran Butterworth, 17, bled to death following the attack by Ghanu Stout on Bellbrooke Street, Harehills.

Stout, 27, formerly of Lupton Avenue, Harehills, is on trial at Leeds Crown Court where he denies murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter.

Simon Waley, prosecuting, told the court: ?At the time of the killing, Kieran owed some money to the defendant. The prosecution say that money was owed for drugs.

?It is the prosecution?s case that this defendant sought out Kieran that day, that he was angry in relation to that debt and before he went to find Kieran he armed himself with a knife.? Mr Waley described how Stout grabbed Kieran in a cafe on Bellbrooke Street as he was buying sandwiches with his friend, Tyrone Henry, around lunchtime on February 12 this year.

Kieran managed to break free and run away but Stout chased after him. One witness described how Stout?s shouting was ?like venom? as he gave chase. The prosecutor said Stout caught Kieran at a grass verge and climbed on top of him. He added: ?Mr Henry says that the defendant was punching in what he described as a ?hammering? actions.?

Mr Waley said Mr Henry then noticed Stout had what appeared to be a knife.

CCTV footage captured shortly after the alleged attack shows Kieran running across a road with his hand to his chest. He collapsed a short time later and was pronounced dead later that day in hospital.

Mr Waley said Stout handed himself in to police the next day but denied attacking Kieran. He told officers he had gone to meet Kieran at the cafe but had been threatened. Stout said he didn?t realise he had a knife in his pocket but pulled it out. He said Mr Henry then pushed him and he and Kieran ended up on the floor.

Stout said he then got up and left and didn?t even know Kieran was injured.
